The robin babies continue to get bigger. I don't think it'll be long before they fledge. The one baby started climbing on top of its siblings and I almost thought it was going to launch itself out of the nest. Even the smallest one has started opening its eyes ( Read more... )

The other day, dad said that he saw that there were three robin babies in the nest. I finally got a visual on all three of them this morning. It's funny how, just in the past few days, one of the babies has been raising its head, to where all you'd see is a neck and a beak rising out of the nest. I thought I'd heard tiny peeps coming from the nest earlier in the week. Then, the other day, I saw a little beak sticking out from the top of the nest. We've had confirmation: There are, in fact, three little robins up in the nest. How do I know? Because they're now big enough to stick not only their beaks, but their heads above the beam in the pergola. And it's like Audrey II over there at all times: FEED ME! It's been about a week since I first noticed possible babies in the nest. We've started to see two birds at once keeping an eye on things. This is why I think there are three babies--when both parents were up there yesterday, I could see them putting their beaks into three separate places, likely feeding three separate mouths. Last year, we had two nests of mourning dove babies born on our pergola. We managed to scare the doves off this year, which of course isn't exactly hard (you just have to look at them funny and they'll fly away, skittish little things), but that hasn't prevented another bird couple from starting a family in the yard, or so it appears ( Read more... )

This morning, just before I took my shower, I heard cooing close by. A glance out the window revealed a dove atop the pergola, soon joined by a second. They hopped into the framing area below the pergola. Oh, dear. What are you two doing?
