It's been about a week since I first noticed possible babies in the nest. We've started to see two birds at once keeping an eye on things. This is why I think there are three babies--when both parents were up there yesterday, I could see them putting their beaks into three separate places, likely feeding three separate mouths. Wow.
The parents perch up there with their beaks open, almost like they're panting. Mom looked it up and that's pretty close to what it is; they're doing that to stay cool. Again, we're in a stretch of 90s that isn't quitting anytime soon, and likely no rain until the end of the week. I even went out there yesterday to make sure there was water in our birdbath. There was, but might as well add more. We have seen the birds go out and drink and bathe, so at least they're partaking of it.
I know, back when we had mourning doves, that it took a few weeks for the babies to get somewhat big. I keep waiting to see little beaks peeking up over the side of the beam they're by. So far, there's been none of that. Also, I keep seeing shadows, like if a parent bird is up there, I might see movement and get excited, but it ends up being the parent's own beak in silhouette. Rats. But it probably won't be too much longer.
