Mom finally had an appointment to cut her hair yesterday. She'd had an appointment over two weeks ago, except it got canceled because her stylist had gone out of town--to Florida, even--and was made to quarantine for two weeks. I think on Wednesday or so, the salon called to say the stylist wasn't coming back (like, she quit her job or something), and did she want to make an appointment with someone else? Mom has been itching to get her hair cut, and seemed jealous that grandma has had two hair appointments recently, so sure, she'll go on Saturday, even if it's a holiday. Of course, being a not-normal year, it's not like we had plans, and we're sure the stylists were happy to be earning money after being forced to be off for however many weeks. It worked out.
Imagine our surprise when mom comes home with hair that's still long enough to pull into a ponytail, for the most part; the very bottom isn't long enough any more. I expected mom to come back shorn. I mean, she's been complaining about how long her hair is. When she can pull all her hair into a single ponytail, that's pretty impressive for her. It's probably been close to 30 years since she could do that--I have a picture of her from 1992 where it's about the longest I'd ever seen it, reaching her shoulders, but otherwise she's always kept it short in my lifetime. I mean, okay, do what you want to do, but when all you've done is complain, one would think you'd have gone shorter. Her reasoning is that it's still hot outside, and she didn't want it so short she couldn't pull it back, and now she's cut off the bottom layer of her hair so her hair's almost all one length. Okay...I mean, how long do you think it'll be until you get another haircut? She thinks it was probably February the last time that happened; I don't think it'll be another five months, but that's just me. Whatever. I mean, she looks fine, but it was completely unexpected.
As for me, I still haven't done more than dust my split ends. My hair's still in pretty bad shape, but again, if I'm wearing it up at almost all times, it is easier to have all this length. If you remember the old claw clips from the '90s, I'm able to wear my big ones again; they're probably about five inches long. I stopped using them for a long time because I didn't have enough hair to fill one, so I used a smaller one that's only a couple inches long and has grippy rubber on the inside so it holds better. That's worked fine for a long time. Now, when I twist my hair before clipping, there's too much of it and it sort of flops out the top of the smaller clip. I pretty much had to pull out the bigger clips. That was kind of amazing.
