Last night while returning home from my walk, I heard a strange noise coming from the vicinity of a car parked on a driveway. What, is there a dog inside? It was this odd sort of barking sound, but a peek in the car did not produce sight of a dog. That's weird. The sound continued, so I looked underneath. Instead of a dog, I spotted a mama duck, bark-quacking at me. She had two little ducklings along with her. Mama, that's not a good place for your babies! I told her. She emerged from the side of the car, babies in tow, and proceeded to go toward the garage, then hung a left and waddled into the grass. I kept walking, and she sort of followed me west, peck-peck-pecking the whole time. She wandered up into the next house's yard, at which point the road curved a little and I couldn't see her any longer. That was certainly unexpected.
These were houses that back to the park, so it wasn't so unusual to see ducks nearby, but babies? They're too little to fly themselves, so I wonder where their nest is--and why there were only two of them. There's usually a gaggle. Given our terrible storms last week--we're up to 27 tornadoes last Monday, woohoo! *sigh*--it was suggested that perhaps something happened to the other babies. That's a sad possibility, and could be why the mama duck was upset to have a human so close to her ducklings. I hope they made it somewhere safer than someone's front yard.
