We've had an unusually warm winter, which has progressed to an unusually warm March. It's been very spring-like this week, though we really have about a week and a half to go for official spring. The other day I saw multiple people in shorts, and when I got home, the neighbor kids were out playing in their yard. It was so nice that we opened the windows, and that was how we knew the dogs behind us came out, because there was this cacophony of barking at said children as they and their friends jumped on their trampoline. When my parents asked what was going on, I said, the border patrol is out there. They liked that so much that that's what we've taken to calling the puppy, who's about a year old now. Silly thing. Oh, do we miss their old fence at times like this.
The ducks haven't reappeared in the yard, but that doesn't mean they haven't been around. A few mornings ago, they were on a neighboring roof; yesterday, as I was leaving, one flew onto my roof. It was the male, alone; I said, where is your lady? You both are always welcome. But it was while peeking out at the first ducks on the other roof that I noticed the buds on the trees were opening. Our tree and the tree behind us have been budding these past couple weeks, and I legit started seeing green on our tree that morning with the ducks and my father's evil phone alarm. Now, I'm not officially calling it green day, because I'm not noticing the green, fuzzy haze around most of the area trees, just our own, but still...this is the earliest I can recall such a thing, and in checking my tags (going back to 2008, because I'm too lazy to go back another page), this is accurate. I will say, though, that 2012 came close; that was the year we had truly unusual warmth for March, and I have photographic proof of the greening (on St. Patrick's Day, of all days), so we're a week ahead of that. It's the same tree blooming now as then, incidentally. I'll have to look around to see if anything else is coming back alive. Most of the time, this happens in April, so we're weeks ahead of schedule. Dad is still hesitant to do any real gardening, but he's itching to get started. I honestly think we're past all the brutally cold weather, though 20s and certainly 30s are a possibility.
Oh, to be done with winter. That's my only hope. All else is gravy at this point.
