I was gearing up to write a thoughtful and reflective post on Ferdinand's first weeks at school when we had to have our beloved cat Hermes put to sleep on, coincidentally, the first anniversary of Juliet's death. Our gorgeous boy is at the vet, on a drip and getting antibiotics with a mouth full of necrotic ulcers and bloodwork worse than last time. He's still reasonably perky so they're going to keep him on the drip for a couple of days and then review his bloodwork. Boadecia and Hermes (our two 'special needs' kittehs) both went to the vet this evening. Boadecia for follow-up after having teeth removed last week and Hermes for a general check. we are now basking in the glow of being very good cat-parents!

Hermes' kidney results are pretty bad. There's an outside chance it's just an infection but it's not likely. It's possible he'll be able to have a while of being OK with the right diet but "not years and years". The vet is going to keep him on a drip and feed him up a bit to see what sort of difference that makes so, at least, we have time to think ( Read more... )

The vet is worried enough by Hermes' loss of weight and condition that he's put him on a drip for re-hydration and is doing blood tests for liver and kidney function. Even if that's OK he's going to be there at least overnight before they will operate on his abscessed teeth. I'm having a very fretful morning, needless to say and I'm missing my ( Read more... )

Jamie has just taken Boadecia off to the cattery and I need to get off my butt and start packing to head off to Auckland tomorrow morning. The kids are absurdly excited so I'm not sure how I'm going to manage to get them into bed appropriately early tonight - soporifics in the pasta maybe? I'm missing my second meeting for this week. Last night I missed the Homebirth association due to my lift falling through. Tonight I'm missing Playcentre because not only does my lift have a tummy bug but Crispin has the flu and was all clingy and tearful. We got the class lists for next year today. Crispin is in the class that we wanted. There are only three year twos and the rest are year threes and fours (C is going into year three). about half the class are in his current class and he has one good friend plus several other kids he works quite well with. I think Hermes is over-grooming himself. He started a couple of weeks ago with a couple of bites and scratches that looked like very minor fight wounds and now he's got a bunch of licked-bare scabby bits. I wouldn't be surprised if half the neighbourhood is feeling sorry for the mangy stray and putting out extra food for him. I'm putting off taking ( Read more... )
