I've been reading through the game manual for Space:1889 and find I'm waffling on whether I should use the rules as is, or use an alternative system. The game system is inelegant, with a number of complicated charts for each weapon and a lot of rules for running a game. The other day I found a PDF copy of the Doctor Who: Adventures in Time and Space role playing game. The rules are pretty good and fairly simple. It's a point based character creation system like GURPS, with a simple mechanic of adding your character's attribute with whatever skill and traits are relevant to a role of 2d6.
