Jafax '08 was my first con ever. I shrewdly elected to cosplay as Black Lagoon's Roberta, which turned out to be a LOT of trouble. Tip for cosplay newbs: Do NOT attempt a full-on maid costume for your first cosplay ever. Even if it turns out fairly nicely (and it did) you will be putting yourself through a lot of torture.
