ramblings on race
When I hear people going on about white and POC people and how being white makes you automatically an oppressive dick and being POC automatically makes you a pathetic oppressed helpless baby, it makes me facepalm. Apparently "being white" is interpreted in two ways---either having pale skin, which seems to be more common, or having European ancestry...being POC seems to mean anything that isn't white.
First off, I find it moronic to divide people up into such all-encompassing categories, since on both sides there is a CRAP TON of diversity that can't be contained so easily, and second, MY FAMILY. My dad is Jewish and looks it. My mom is various European ethnicities. My siblings and I look different; my sister and the older of my brothers are darker than myself and my youngest brother, with dark hair and eyes and they tan SUPER dark in the summer; my brother sometimes gets mistaken for Mexican as he has the dark skin but his facial features aren't obviously Jewish. My sister is dark, has obviously Jewish facial features. My youngest brother has pale skin, light brown hair/green eyes, and Jewish facial features. I have pale skin, curly light brown hair, gray eyes and subtly Jewish facial features (as in, my hairstyle can affect how Jewish I look.)
So tell me now, what are we? Are my middle siblings POC and us bookend siblings white? Are we all white, since Jews are now officially considered white even though there has never, regardless of the color of our skin, been any time or place before the end of the 20th century, in Western society, where we EVER were? Are we all POC, owing to my dad's Israeli ancestry? Or maybe it doesn't matter because in the end we are all HUMAN. I hate how people judge everyone by race. I don't care what race you're judging or why. If I hated all modern-day Germans, that would make me a bad person, I really think so, because you shouldn't judge people for things others did, no matter if they share a race, ethnicity, gender, I don't care! HATE IS WRONG and so is dividing people into little groups so you can decide who's somehow morally superior.
