word to yo' mutha

Why in the world is the word "egaltarian" and not "equaltarian" when the word deals specifically with the concept of equality and is also derived from the same Latin word that "equality" is derived from. Discuss.

edit: So voiceboxx showed me this thing called a "dictionary". It has like information and is totally bitchin', but that's another story. Anyway the "dictionary" says that while the meaning is derived from the Latin, the spelling is derived from the Latin-inspired French, "égalitaire". In fact, "equality" is apparently "égalité" French. So there you have it.

And as long as we're talking about written language, should there be single or double quotes around words as I have used them above? Because double looks weird. I see double and I think dialog.

Oh, and in other news, apparently welcome to Spelling & Syntax Sunday up in here.
