Stargate Voyager 90210 Universe Casting

Feb 25, 2009 08:34

I, um. See some (more) potentially skeevy racial and gender issues coming up in the casting. (If you weren't already aware of my thoughts on those in the Gateverse, you might want to skip the post. I'm not particularly nice in my thoughts about the PTB these days.)

If you think casting info and character stuff is spoilery, don't click. )

a human resources executive with the international oversight committee that governs the Stargate program. Now the highest-ranking member of that division left stranded on the ship, she carries herself with a misguided sense of superiority over the other military and civilian survivors.

I think I'm already scared, for the reasons you mentioned. Also, it sounds too much like a "misguided" version of Elizabeth, which feels like a backstab to this EW fan.

Also, if they treat her character badly, I'm pretty sure I won't watch it... I like her way too much.

Why, yes, I was thinking something like that.

It just creeps me out. Actually, the more I think about it, the more I'm certain I should skip it. (I don't know if you watched "Remnants" -- it's one of half decent S5 episodes - they had some IOA lady - I don't know what was her name; Asian, going to Atlantis and playing a really dirty game to overtake Woolsey's position. Damn it, why does it have to be a woman?! Asian, no less? Do these guys have some sort of racist issue?)

Do these guys have some sort of racist issue?

Long story short: Yes.

Second: OMG. I LOVE SHEN. Partly because I love anyone Tamlyn Tomita plays, but, also, I really enjoy the idea that Shen is Not Wrong, she just operates under a different value system, and is jockeying for power for a different country.

I mean, I'm sure I'd loathe the execution of Remnants, which is why I didn't even bother watching. It would be way more interesting if it had been Elizabeth and Shen in a political fight. But even then, I'd have to acknowledge the skeevy racial issues of the Gateverse PTB.

Robert Carlyle (or however it's spelled) AND Phillips on the show? No way they both survive the pilot.

I was originally planning to give SGU a chance, but after Brad Wright's obnoxious behavior online and the casting choices and JF's comments from last weekend, I'm heading more towards "not worth bothering."

Damn. I mean, you're right, and, yet, I don't want you to be.

Want to come live under this rock with me? We can create our own vision of how things should have happened. Er. Wait, we already did that, didn't we?

I love Ming-Na but can smell their fear of a woman being in charge from over here. (I mean, the simple fact that Sam wasn't in charge of SG-1 after Jack left...)

The sad thing is, if we hadn't already been there with Elizabeth, I might get bouncy at the potential for sparring and/or character growth. Because I love me some character growth and bossy ladies, but how what PTB here treats them.

GIRL COOTIES. EW!

Er, I mean, yes, I totally agree with you. I notice that Amanda had to leave the show and steal some of the production staff to get the behind-the-scenes experience that she clearly both adores and has wanted for years. Hell, that alone would get me watching Sanctuary, even if it didn't hit all my Victorian literature and urban fantasy fic kinks admirably.

Looks like half of my last sentence was either eaten, or never made it out of my brain! But then, I'm up an hour earlier than usual.

And yeah, there will be an episode like that, at which point, what fondness I had for the boys will diminish, and then it'll repeat. You know, like SGA.

I haven't seen Sanctuary yet, but those are the things that make me interested, too.

The only possibly good thing about watching it would be having other people to bitch about it with. Which is no good reason for watching a show. :(

Let me know when you start on Sanctuary! I'll be curious to see what you think of it.

OH FOR FUCK'S SAKE!!! I am ANGRY WITH RAGE now. I saw the description for that character in January before they cast it and it was my last straw for any chance of ever watching that show, and now, not only is she a woman, she's Asian, too?? Good fucking Christ, are they trying to come up with the most egregious stereotyping they CAN?

I feel like someone should write Ming-Na a note and warn her, you know? Do you think maybe she just doesn't have any idea how badly she's about to get screwed over? I mean, there probably exists a team who could do awesome things with the character list as SG 90210 is written, but this is not that team.

You forgot that the IOA is international, and therefore evil, because all we need is good old-fashioned American ingenuity to save the universe, didn't you? I know, I know, I forget these things occasionally, until I watch an episode of Stargate and remind myself of that. (Also, all black men are badasses with horrible tempers, women should know their place, doctors are doomed to die horribly unless they're one of the white male series leads, and the entire galaxy is comprised of Renaissance Faire planets.)

Occasionally I forget how bitter I really am. But today isn't that day.

BUT YES. Poor Ming-Na. I'm sure she's going to do a wonderful job with the material she has, but I expect the material will be AWFUL.

[snip of ranting]

*cough*

They screwed over almost all their characters, one way or another. I expect they'll do the same thing here, and I just do not want to be along for the ride.

I know. Seriously, I've invested enough time and energy into this fandom and these series, and I'm so over the idea of a third show.

Look, even more reasons not to watch. Even for the hilarity that is Lou Diamond Phillips.

Don't you know, we all must submit the White Male's Authority? Seriously, do these writers live in the dark ages?

(When you said Shen, I started thinking, wait, someone's putting out an Authority movie.)

I think they wish we did. It's the only explanation I can come up with.
