Characters: Severus with mentions of Hermione, Albus and the Dark Lord.

I dare you.
The Dark Lord is a sadistic bastard, constantly daring his follows to darker more sinister exploits.
Severus is tired of the sport. The end game is upon them. Brother will fight brother tooth and nail.
Taking a moment, he summons his courage; it is time to face the serpent.
This is his recompense; this is the price he must pay for wayward youth.
This is what he must do to give his lover the bright future she deserves.
His warrior princess, his Hermione, he will fight to the end for her.
He dares because she loves him.

I dare you.
The Dark Lord doesn’t challenge him. He plays mind games, leaves him hanging until the last moment.
Neither master particularly cared for him. He was a useful puppet now he is no longer required.
Albus has already cast him aside, his carefully constructed plan failed a year ago.
A flick of the Elder wand summons the snake - Severus has always loathed snakes, death by House emblem isn’t much better than drapery.
As his memories slip from him he sees Hermione, wills her to look his way.
Potter is gone, she has stayed.
“Live, Severus. I dare you.”
