A friend and I are putting together a talk that will compare and contrast different styles of massage and bodywork - Swedish, shiatsu, tui na, Thai, etc.  If you were to attend such a talk, what kind of questions would you hope to have answered?

Gov. Paterson's budget proposal includes new sales tax on salons, spas, weight loss centers, and gyms, and included in the language is sales tax on massage therapy.  However, the proposed language excludes taxation on chiropracters, doctors, dentists, nurses and anyone else licensed under Title VIII of the State Education Law. There's a meeting tonight at the spa to discuss the pay situation, but it's at 9pm and I have both gaming tonight (yay!) and an early morning tomorrow, so I'm skipping it.  I did send an email just a moment ago detailing my feelings, with a copy to the receptionist, who is going to print it out and make sure one of the therapists has a copy.

I have to leave my other spa now, too.  He's restructuring the payments, and instead of a flat hourly rate, we'll be getting a percentage.  Which would be fine - better, in fact - if I worked a shift where people payed full price, but I don't: I work the morning, and everyone gets a discount.  I like it there, but not enough to take a pay cut.  ( Read more... )

I was informed today by one of the assitants at work that I wouldn't be seeing one of my patients any more, because his insurance isn't good enough.  The boss-man later confirmed that we actually were losing money by scheduling people with this type of insurance for massage.

I hate the whole insurance industry.
