I started to read Nigel Slater's memoir of his childhood, Toast, more than a year ago but I find it hard to finish. Slater describes his mother's use of an inhaler and his Aunt Fanny's incontinence in ways that I find offensive. It makes sense that as a boy in the 1960s, he had a child's view of these women.
