up early (with the dogs) and hit the Parkway by 7:00 a.m. - drove to Black Balsm Trailhead for hike to Black Balsm Knob and Tennent Mountain. Weather - perfect. Cooler at higher altitudes. Minimal traffic in the a.m ( Read more... )

My first attempt at Mount Mitchell was kind of thwarted by the weather. But on the way down (once we got beneath the clouds) it was stunning. [Highest point east of the Mississippi and south of Canada at 6,684 ft)
