Went to Sadler's Wells on Friday with
silverjet_allie and
inkognitoh, to see a really interesting performance of the Faerie Queen. We went to a Thai place on the corner first for a bite to eat, then on to the show.
It was a cool way of presenting a literary fantasy epic without going down the route of OTT special effects. A small company of performers, like latter-day strolling players or something. Pared down staging, using recycled material for props and costumes, with elements of choral speaking and interpretive dance to tell the story. Very imaginatively done, and had some brilliant effects - the giant puppetry in particular (swirling cloud of ping-pong balls for Ate, goddess of chaos, and a sea-god jellyfish made of fishing nets). I liked the use of symbolic costumes - armour was implied by zip-up jackets, with one sleeve bare to suggest classical robes and the collars zipped up like the beaver on a suit of plate. Though obviously, I'd have preferred real plate and swordplay...
Then we went back to Inkoh's boat for festive drinks and nibbles. Had a good natter and a few glasses of rum. Thanks for hosting, Inkoh.
