The tropics

This is a bad time to live in Florida and be interested in tropical weather, I tell you. It's exhausting keeping up!

Right now we have Hurricane Hanna, Tropical Storm Ike, an area that will probably become a tropical depression within another day or so, and two more areas that are being watched for potential cyclone development.

It's a relief to hear that Gustav was so weak when it made landfall in Louisiana this morning. There seems to be little serious damage done either (although I'm not forgetting that it took two days for the levees to fail after Katrina). All in all, things could have been much, much worse.

Too soon to say if/when Florida will be affected by the upcoming storms. Just keeping track of them all is more than enough for now!

In other news, I've greatly enjoyed the long weekend. I did some major house cleaning; went to the mall and got Kaylee some more of her glucosamine, and then had some bourbon chicken for lunch while I sat and read for a while in the food court; worked on my brother's formerly-birthday-now-Christmas present, and read a lot. I'm re-reading the Thomas Covenant trilogies by Stephen Donaldson. For several months now I've owned the second book of the latest trilogy, but not read it. And since it's been so long since I read the first one -- or any of the series -- I decided to start at the beginning and read them all. It's rather nice, having eight books stretching ahead of me for reading.

Too bad I have to go back to work tomorrow. Ugh...
