I actually I don't think I can pick a favorite Buffy episode. Favorite moments or lines, maybe. Which is funny, because I can choose favorites from other shows that I like (Angel: Smile Time; Supernatural: The Monster at the End of the Book [though there are many, many second favorites]; Firefly: Out of Gas [followed closely by Jaynestown and Our Dear Mrs. Reynolds]; Community: Epidemiology; Arrested Development: Pier Pressure, etc. etc.).
Smile Time, Out of Gas, and Pier Pressure are all wonderful, though none of them are my number one. Though OOG is very close. (I don't actually watch SPN or Community, so....) I'm pretty sure Pier Pressure is my favourite season 1 episode though.
Pier Pressure wins because I fell off the couch laughing the first time I watched it. No matter how good the show got, it was always going to be my number one. :-)
Mine is probably Good Grief. The Charlie Brown joke is perfection, but what gets me is the physical double act of Gob and Buster on an ostensibly solemn occasion.
Ah yes, conversation. I try to encourage that practice.
I think the coffin thing is super bad-ass on a general level, but I can appreciate that it could probably have been filmed better.
Loving "Walk Through The Fire" is a correct way to feel, friend.
The musical is watchabke without the show, but Buffy's sheer depression isn't visible alone.
lol, I had to read this sentence a couple of times. Yeah, I agree. I showed the episode to a non-BtVS friend one time, and she totally misinterpreted some stuff.
my friends and I sang through the whole musical on a short road trip on my bday this year.
This was a bad-ass thing you did and you should feel good.
Yeah, probably. I mean, it's definitely the one I've rewatched the most. And you have it right: it's the episode that captures the batshit crazy but so delicately balanced tone that BtVS strives for. It's a comedy! It's a drama! It's a musical! It's an action thing where puppets get beaten up! I'm not sure if it's the best (though it might be), but it's like it's the MOST Buffy ep of all time. (Having 33% more screen width and a slightly longer running time doesn't hurt there.)
Oh, speaking of meta jokes: I have no idea what to make of it, but I love so dearly that when Xander raises his hand to say that he summoned the demon, he's standing in front of a cartoon space man who's also raising his hand! Look! --> http://www.buffyworld.com/buffy/screencaps/B107/index.php?id=2730
WHAT IS THAT SUPPOSED TO MEAN? I have no clue. But it's so goddamn funny an image. I feel sorry for Xander fans who have to defend Xander's behaviour here, I do. But Joss is playing with us. YES GUYS, MY SCRIPTS ARE CONTRIVED, DEAL WITH IT, IT'S MOTHERFUCKING HOLLYWOOD. With a side order of OH YOU GUYS THOUGHT IT WOULD BE FUN TO SEE A MUSICAL, WELL LOOK AT WHAT MY EVERYMAN-VIEWER-REPRESENTATIVE DID, HE CAUSED PEOPLE TO DIE TAKE THAT AUDIENCE HA HA HA BUT ALSO JUST KIDDING. Dammit Joss! (Affectionately.)
Oh, DUDE. I have watched this episode 70 billion times and have never paid attention to that cartoon space man. For shame, me. BUT I HAVE NO CLUE EITHER. It's probably there for the lulz. You know what Joss is like.
Yeah, I just dismiss the Xander stuff as a contrivance. I mean, I'm 99% sure it was revealed to be Xander so they could use that one line. Which... I'm not entirely disapproving of, because I am a terrible person. Like Joss. :)
Aaaannd... now I'm listening to the soundtrack at my desk.
I have a completely irrational emotional attachment to this episode. Completely. Irrational. I would carry this episode's baby. I would raise this episode's baby to be the kind of episode that its father is (? Is the episode male? My metaphor is thinning out on me. Is this even a metaphor? I'm confused. What am I talking about? Where am I?). True story.
I can't even pick a favorite song. I could narrow it down to four. No, five. I have five favorite songs. Unless you count the reprise of Under My Spell as a separate song, then there's six.
I have nothing productive to add--but I can tell you stories about me listening to the OMWF soundtrack in my car and weeping while listening to Giles sing that he wishes he could stay. Weeping. Like a babe in the woods. For reals.
It may have been raining outside. And I was definitely crying AND singing... and taking breaks in the singing to wail, "Giles! She needs you, you imbecile! Don't Go!"
My top five or six songs in no particular order are: Walk Through the Fire Standing/Under My Spell Reprise (that's the full song standing and the reprise of the duet) Going Through the Motions Something to Sing About I've Got a Theory
SMG=Gorgeous. Truth. And that redish hair with that bright red sweater and the bright red lips? Ugh. So much pretty.
Whatever, losers. I love musicals, and if you don't, I have nothing to say to you!
*raspberry*
Let's talk about SMG being gorgeous and her awesome, awesome outfit. Because I never get tired of that. Trench coats are sexy, okay? So is red, which is, incidentally, my favorite color. AND SHE AND SPIKE ARE COLOR-COORDINATED, OKAY?
Also I love all the things that you love. “Fool for Love” is my favorite episode, but yeah, this one’s probably second. WHY SO PRECARIOUSLY PERFECT, SHOW?

I too have no favorite episode. Also too many posts to catch up on. ;) I love singing along to this though, even though I *ducks* dislike musicals.
I think Spike's number was badly filmed Tthough. Once they leave the crypt it's better to listen to than watch. But the reluctant singing- I love it.
Hm, I had more to say but got distracted by a yummy cinnamon raisin bagel with raisin walnut tofu cream cheese.

Hee, most people I meet dislike musicals. You are not alone.
Yeah, I do recall Joss on the commentary complaining that Rest in Peace didn't turn out as good as he wanted. Still awesome though.

Mmm, veganey food.
Yeah, it's the coffin thing.
I love walk through the fire.

Tru fax- my friends and I sang through the whole musical on a short road trip on my bday this year. :D

Also, SMG looks so gorgeous in this episode.

I feel like this episode is neither a girl nor a boy, really. Which might make impregnation complicated...
I think my favorite is probably "Walk Through The Fire." Followed by "Where Do We Go"? Yeah. Liable to change at the drop of a hat though.
lol, were you crying AND singing along? And meanwhile it was raining outside? Because that I can believe.
SMG looks gorgeous in every episode. But it's not every episode she gets to wear that red top and trench-coat.

All excellent choices. *nod* Of course, they're all excellent so I'd have been likely to say the same thing regardless of what you put.
OMG, can I fangirl the redish hair for a mo? I love it. IDK. Best shade of blonde. S6. It's aesthetically pleasing.
