I attended my first auction of 2011 today; The main reason I went was because they were selling a 1984 Versatile 400 Swather, which is a newer model of the one I currently have. I was hoping that it would sell cheaply, but that was not the case - it wound up selling for $2,500.00, which was well above what I was prepared to pay for it. It was in excellent condition, and if I had more money to spend freely, I likely would have purchased it, or at least raised the bidding higher.
I did purchase a small (3HP) Tecumseh horizontal-shaft engine for a mere $10, and a Briggs & Stratton engine with a pump for $25. Both of these engines are quite old and collectable, so I'm happy with them. I also purchased a 3kW Kohler generator system for $150, which I should be able to re-sell for a tidy profit. One of the biggest purchases, cost-wise and physically, was a 7' wide 3-pt-hitch snow-thrower attachment for my tractor! I was a little concerned about my tractor being powerful enough to run it, but according to the owner's manual, it's designed for tractors in the 40-65 HP range, which is perfect for my old MF-65 tractor. The snow-thrower was $800, which I feel is money well-spent given that a little 27" Sears snow-thrower costs over $1200, and as I well know, is not really suitable for the heavy use on a farm. A new snow-thrower of this type would range anywhere from $3500 to $5000!
With the weather calling for yet more snow this weekend, I think I made a great deal on the snow-thrower!
