A few months ago, I posted here because I'd been offered a horse by my BO and I was asking for advice whether or not I should take the offer. Well, I meant to let you all know how it all turned out, but life always got in the way.

( So here is a much delayed update on my first horse )

I have come here with a ton of problems I have had finding a decent stable to ride/show for. The ending agreement from everyone was to just leave them all together--and I did!

So it finally happened, the thing I knew had to happen eventually. The lease I had on the mare I was riding was ended. Her owner is moving, and we are still friendly, I might continue the lease again if he moves quickly and not too far away, but I don't know. I'm gonna go pick up all my tack later today.

Today was an interesting day. It started with my usual 10am lesson, but I was surprised to find out the horse I was riding was not going to be one of the usual ones. Now, this horse is mostly used by advanced riders, due to the fact that he was only started under saddle when he was 5, so he's a bit of pea brain sometimes. I bought a horse in February of 08 from one of my old trainers, and finished paying him off December 09. My trainer was really desperate to sell him and sold him way cheaper than what he was worth, and really, really wanted to me to take him (she's been trying to get me to buy him since I was 12 years old). How common is it for your trainer who has helped you to find a horse, to charge a commission? My trainer, who has willingly driven with me hours each way and all the way to Canada to check out multiple horses, charges a 10% commission. My friend says she's super weirded out by that and my trainer seems really money hungry. As this is my first horse ( Read more... )

Found this very sad article in my local paper today :( This is Ireland where the economy has basically crashed big time. I've always planned to stay in Michigan long term, and a big reason for that is my horses. Michigan has so many affordable areas for equestrians. There's ample "cheap" land within an hour's drive of most major cities, cheap hay (I regularly pay $3-$4 a bale), plentiful water (no worries about severe drought or water rights), and even inexpensive ( Read more... )

So I have this dilemma about finding a job/home for my former Grand Prix horse (jumper). My parents actually own him, they bought him about nine years ago when we had a farm together and he took me in my first Grand Prixs.
