Building Term
Hey, greta_k, maybe you can help with this one!
A pastor from a local church called to ask what the word is for the "canopy" that cars drive under to let people out in front of a building. He didn't say why he wanted to know. I came up with portico, but the definition doesn't quite fit. The online thesaurus didn't help. The Visual Dictionary of Buildings didn't help either, although it is a really cool book and likely to distract me from the actual question! :-)
In the process of searching online I found a really cool website that I had to save in del.icio.us for the library and myself. It's a page of Building Terms with a thumbnail image illustrating each term. You can click the term to see more images. Lots of them of medieval. Cool! More distraction.
I still haven't found a term better than portico.
