Hocking Hills weekend (photo travel log)

rfunk and I had a really nice time on our weekend vacation to the Hocking Hills region of Ohio. I took Friday off from work. We took our time getting up and packed, and arrived at our cabin about 4pm Friday evening. The cabin we stayed at is called The Bunkhouse. It had a small kitchen, gas outdoor grill, gas fireplace, and outdoor jacuzzi. The pilot light on the gas fireplace was out, so rfunk called to have it turned on. The man who arrived to fix it turned out to be the property owner (as opposed to the rental manager). Our cabin used to be a small barn where he raised quarter horses. He pointed to their pictures on the cabin wall. He renovated the barn after he got rid of the horses and plans to live there when he retires.

I was charmed by this kindly man, and by the story behind the house. The cowboy motif of the interior decoration did go a bit overboard, though.

Deer head that bothered me

Cowboy figurine that bothered rfunk. He thought it looked like Chuck Norris.

The dwarf cherry tree in front of the cabin was in full bloom,

The next day we drove up the road to Old Man's Cave for a walk. The weather was just about perfect. Blue skies, warm sun, but cool air. The Old Man's Cave is a recess cave in sandstone cliffs. There are trails along the creek that carved the cliffs, as well as along the gorge rim above. We started out walking along the rim trails, then went down into the gorge. We didn't travel a huge horizontal distance, but the vertical distance was fairly intense.

It was the most cardio exercise I have gotten since December. I was a bit worried about how I would do, but once I warmed up I was in a groove. I actually wanted to do more hiking after lunch, but rfunk was worn out and opted for a nap instead. I suppose it's best that I didn't push it.

I didn't notice the rainbow in thiw waterfall until I saw it on the computer at home.

We took Patches with us, as she gets lonely at home without her people. It was nice not having to worry about her alone at home (I put the boy cats outside for the weekend), but that also meant she had to stay in the car after we checked out of the cabin Sunday morning. It was too warm to leave her there for long so we couldn't do any additional hiking on Sunday. There are many more trails in the Hocking Hills area; I'm itching to go back for more exploration.
