Made it to my friend's & got the ice, but I misjudged the timing of the bands & the next one hit just as I got back in the car. Luckily was only about 12 blocks from my house & only about 5 blocks were really hairy - the rain comes in solid sheets that block vision completely for a second, then you get a quick view of the road followed by another sheet. As a local I know how to drive in it- go slow, pay close attention to what is ahead of you so you know what to do & HAVE YOUR LIGHTS ON! What scares me is the idiots who decide to drive faster so they will get home sooner- & frequently they do not turn their lights on. They are the reason you don't pull off on the side of the road in severe rain- they will run right into you at speed- I have seen that many rimes!
After that band I quickly cleared my drainage of debris & added another sandbag to a spot that was about to overtop- only had about 8 minutes before the next band but everything seems to be good now.
Tip did not sleep much last night, which meant she made sure I did not sleep much either- hopefully I can get a nap today. Tip & Isis are the only kitties that seem worried (Isis I expected, she was a Katrina rescue). They are staying close to me, but never take their eyes off the window.
Power is out on Dauphin Island- some idiot decided NOW was a good time to move his big sailboat, & he decided to do it under full sail instead of by motor. Naturally he got in trouble, called for help, some brave souls went after him & he ditched his boat STILL WITH THE SAILS UP. Now the boat is sailing wildly around the sound, nearly hit the bridge, turned at the last second & took out the power lines, which are now wrapped around it & it is continuing to sail- amongst piers, boat slips etc. Once notified the power co cut the juice to stop it starting fires as it hits things, & some brave souls are in a boat trying to catch it without getting hit or sunk by it. All because of one self-centered idiot.
