I found this NY Times review just plain weird. I think the Times thinks they're doing New York Youth a service by reviewing them (and arguably, they certainly are), but they need to come up with a better format for reviews. All of ours have always been the same "young kids play old music!" format, and it becomes both tiresome and condescending. ( Read more... )

This made me really sad. Rostropovich died. I guess when famous people like that die you just have to feel thankful that you got to see them while they were still around, but still, Rostropovich conducting was one of the best things -- people rarely bring that much excitement and joy to anything.

P.S. Last night, my stand partner mistook me for a non-student member of the group!  So, not only did she think I was older than I actually am, but she therefore also thought I was a professional musician!  Just a pretty good feeling, for a "real" musician to make that kind of assumption ( Read more... )
