In the last 48 hours, it has poured rain, had sideways snow, hail, wind that’s thrashed the plants, little lightweight white pellets that look like packing peanuts but tiny, and brilliant sunshine. There was a robin here today! Landed on the Rosa glauca, started eating rose hips, and then spotted me inside. He hopped to a twig closer to the window, and proceeded to stare at me for like 10 minutes straight. I finally yelled "I can't help you! I can't make the snow go away!" Well, on this the first day of Spring, the sun was out for, say, a half an hour. During that time I went out and fed chickens, brought in the mail, and walked around my garden, which is still mostly under snow. Planted the first seeds in the raised beds today! Spinach and a few parsnips. Maybe by starting this early we'll finally get spinach that doesn't go directly to seed. What's really annoying is that the raised beds, because they don't have bottoms, are filled with roots from the fucking poplar trees (my nemesis). Oh, my lord, the first robin is here. And he's not happy at all. We still have 3' of snow. When I went out to feed the chickens, I noticed that the top of the potting bench had come out from under the snow- I was still standing with my feet higher than the top of it, though! I hope robins like bird seed as much as they do bugs....
