Night 47: Main Hallway, 1-West

Feb 10, 2010 12:43

( from here. )There was the stairwell. Kairi couldn't help but smile to herself as she rounded the corner and spotted the familiar hallway, still shrouded in darkness like she remembered it. She could see down the hallway and slightly into the Sun Room from where she was standing, and she lowered her flashlight, not wanting whatever it was that ( Read more... )

[From here.]

As Sora neared the stairs, he could barely believe what he saw. He was used to always being the first of his group to make it to this spot, so the fact that Kairi had gotten there first was a serious shock. Had she run all the way here or something? It wasn't fair!

Still, there was no sign of Riku, which at least meant he wasn't last. Sora couldn't blame his friend for taking a bit longer to get here, and that counted even more so if his room was further away. That didn't mean he wouldn't tease him about it, though. Especially when he'd been talking so big at lunch.

On a more serious note, he hoped that Riku realized that severity of this situation sooner rather than later. It might cost him otherwise, and that was the last thing Sora wanted.

But even more startling than Kairi's presence was what she was holding. His flashlight caused the blade to glint brightly, forcing him to lower it.

"Whoa!" he exclaimed. "Where'd you get that?" But as Sora got closer to the girl and got a better look, he realized that the ( ... )

"Sora!" Kairi smiled when her friend came into view, and she looked down at the sword that her friend had mentioned. "Ta da!" she sang, her smile turning into a grin. "Isn't it great? I remember the last night I was here I was ... upset over Rukia's disappearance ... but in my loss I knew I had to hide her weapon and everything else she had. Don't you remember? I hid the sword under my bed, and I guess when I fell asleep it moved with me ( ... )

Of course he remembered. As Kairi jogged his memory, Sora was quick to nod. "Yeah, I know! It is pretty weird that it stayed with you this whole time..." The institute worked in mysterious ways more often than not, so he guessed they should just be glad that it had smiled on them this once. Then again, Mr. Landel had also seen fit to bring his friends back to him, so things had been going his way lately. Maybe it was to make up for the zombies and brainwashing and everything else ( ... )

[from here]For the most part, he had jogged the entire way, be slowed down as he hit this new hallway, which was filled with numerous people. In the distance, Riku saw Shinji standing around, but it didn't seem like the right time. As much as he knew that guy couldn't handle himself, he needed to get to his friends. The bulletin board seemed like a good place to check up on him, and honestly, it didn't seem like anything could bother him if he was out here. That didn't make Shinji's presence any less surprising; he didn't seem like the type of guy who would risk going out at night. Maybe he was trying to prove something himself, after all ( ... )

"Thanks, Sora," Kairi said as she looked up to her friend, a determined look crossing her face. "But ... it's my fault it happened, so it should be me that tells him. Don't worry ( ... )

If Kairi wanted to be the one who told him, then Sora could understand that just as easily. He nodded to her, figuring that he could serve as moral support either way. Riku would have to accept the news one way or another, but Kairi would probably feel better to have him standing at her side when she delivered the news.

Except that was when Riku showed up, and it was almost as if he had overheard them, even though that couldn't be possible. Still, Sora was able to read his friend's body language even in the dark, and he could tell that Riku was bothered, upset, maybe even angry. He struggled to piece together how Riku could have figured it out without hearing about it directly, but nothing was coming to mind.

Then again, the how wasn't all that important. Riku obviously did know that something had gone wrong, and Sora found himself shrinking back when his friend went so far as to ask him what had happened. As if it was his fault. And... it was, to a point. Kairi was his responsibility, and that was something he and Riku had agreed ( ... )

Really, it was a good thing that Kairi was the one to step up and explain everything to him, because it meant that he couldn't react as badly to it. Riku looked down while she was talking, and despite her very distinct statement-to not feel guilty-he still felt that way, still felt like he was supposed to be here. How was he supposed to just take those words of advice? How was he supposed to just believe that he couldn't have helped? Even if there was no way to tell, he might have been able to be there. If he was still a part of the Darkness, he would have been able to get here sooner. It didn't matter if it was an unfamiliar world.

A princess of heart with Darkness inside. It seemed like just the type of thing that could have been tried, but never managed. Even if Kairi lost her heart, it wasn't the same. The same protective instincts came back, and he knew that Sora hadn't been able to do what he expected him to do. But then again, would Riku have been able to do the same? Would it be fair to put that weight on his best friend ( ... )

Oh, Sora. Kairi turned to look towards her sullen friend, walking over towards him to also gently grasp onto his hand, giving it a slight squeeze before releasing it and turning back towards Riku.

She still wasn't finished.

"It's ... I ... there's more, Riku," she whispered, her voice cracking. Despite how hard she was trying to make it seem like she was invincible, that she felt nothing about it, the pain was slowly becoming evident - in her voice, in her eyes, in her expression, even in her posture. Once Kairi moved back to her protected spot on the wall, it almost seemed like she was curling in on herself, acting as her own shield while she hid away.

The next part was going to be hard to explain. "When I woke up the next morning it ... I ... my body felt like it was on fire, burning from the inside. The slightest touch to anything hurt so terribly ..." She remembered it well, frowning to herself. "But I was slowly getting used to it, until ( ... )

It was Kairi's hand gripping his that caused Sora to refocus. Even now, she was still warm. It wasn't too surprising that Riku was reacting now the same way he had the first time: with action, with the need to repair all the damage that had been done. Sora wanted the same thing, of course, but even in all this time he hadn't been able to find a way to do that. He knew Riku was better with that sort of stuff, not to mention Kairi had been missing for all this time, and yet Sora still felt like he should have done more ( ... )

That was too much for him, knowing that she'd been forced to do that, forced to protect herself. It was strange how she came into accepting the Darkness, so strikingly different from his own, selfish decision; later, he embraced the Darkness in order to protect his friends, but that wasn't the same. The only way he had started down that path was because of his lust for freedom, to get away from those Islands.

Riku pulled back further and looked away, uncertain of how to put his thoughts to words. How was he supposed to be sure of anything when Kairi had been pushed to that limit? His hands curled into fists, and his head lowered again ( ... )

If there was one thing Kairi hated the most in the entire world, it was seeing her best friends unhappy. It felt like years and years and years since Sora and Riku had been happy - actually happy, not the fake kind of happy that was simply a smile or a laugh, but a real, heart warming, mind numbing happiness. They had been that way before the keyblades and the heartless came into the lives, and that seemed like such a long time ago now.

Would they ever truly be happy again?

At that moment, despite her need to believe that they would, Kairi couldn't help but still feel that lingering doubt that was always in the back of her mind.

No, she told herself, her eyes shutting as she thought to herself. Thinking such things is going to get us nowhere. If they can't smile, then you can smile for them. AlwaysKairi turned to look at Sora when she felt his arm around her, and she turned to look at him, giving him a soft smile. It meant a lot to her that he was still there, and that he had forgiven her. While a part of her still hadn't even ( ... )

If there was one thing that always caused Sora to feel off-balance, it was not knowing how Riku felt about something. Even though their tension from a few years back had been resolved a long time ago, there were still times when Sora remembered those days and worried about what was swimming around in Riku's head.

But he was probably over-thinking things. Riku probably just didn't know how to respond to what he'd just heard, because there was no good response. It had happened even though it should have been impossible, and now the only thing they could do was stop thinking about themselves and start thinking about how to support and help Kairi with all of it ( ... )

If he could smile and act like it was nothing, he would. Riku had looked into the Darkness and made a return before, but his very nature was that of someone who could take things upon himself. Everything he had done before was to keep Kairi from being hurt too much. Sora could handle himself-at least, out there, he could do it. The only time his best friend needed that degree of protection was while he was asleep. Being there for him during that time was a necessary facet of his life. But being here was almost the same, with his friend being caught in a position that was almost just as defenseless ( ... )

"Outside?" Kairi asked, frowning. "But isn't it easier to go through the Sun Room? ... Even though there's normally someone in there ..." Perhaps Sora was right about that; she highly doubted they would make it through the Sun Room unnoticed, especially with the three of them. While she was eager to use her sword (and show the boys what she could do,) she knew that most of the time whoever was guarding the Sun Room was at full power ... and wasn't afraid to show it. She vaguely remembered one of the times she had been wandering around with Axel, and whoever had been in the Sun Room made even the air around them thick like water and difficult to breathe in. If someone had the power to do that, then who knew what would be next ( ... )

It looked like his two friends hadn't gotten all of the information that had been given by Hitsugaya over the bulletin board. That was understandable, though; the assignments usually got posted right before dinner, so Sora tended to have to read it in a rush. It was for that reason that he sometimes worried that he didn't remember something right, but he was pretty sure he'd gotten it all this time.

Sora was surprised that Riku was questioning going outside of all things. Not that his friend questioning things was out of the ordinary, but Sora would have figured the other boy would have wanted to get a breath of fresh air, or just get out of the building in general. Then again, maybe he'd already made it out earlier today ( ... )

No way to get home, huh? Nothing figured out, even after so long? It wasn't the most encouraging of statements, but it wasn't like Sora hadn't done what otherwise would have seemed to be impossible. This time, it just seemed like he needed both of his friends at his side. Riku wasn't optimistic enough to think that he would be a changing factor, but he wouldn't give up. Too much had been laid on him already by Sora and Kairi for him to just turn away. Even before, when he was uncertain of how to face everyone, he knew he would keep fighting, keep trying to make things better. At the time, it didn't matter if he couldn't go home, as long as his friends did. He didn't really have the right. Doing what he could, keeping active-that was what was important ( ... )
