My recovery from the charcot foot has achieved a major milestone. I've been wearing the custom molded boot to hold my foot in place while the bones slowly healed. Four months ago, my podiatrist said I need to upgrade to diabetic shoes. Wrote a prescription for the shoes.
Since then I've been chasing my tail dealing with the pedorthic clinic, insurance, and my finances to get the shoes. Making a long story short, finally got an appointment to get my feet measured. Yesterday the clinic called, and told me that my copay is no longer $490, but now $790,and the guy might need to order additional procedures for fitting that would not be covered by insurance. And I needed to reschedule my appointment.
I nearly lost it at being jerked around, but kept my temper. So I went and researched diabetic shoes. It turns out that the studies are just observational, and the science is often very sloppy. So I concluded that it wasn't worth the money and agitation.
Went to the red wing shoe store on the way home from work yesterday. Half an hour later I walked out with a well fitted safety toe and waterproof pair of work boots. Wearing them to work today and I'm relearning how to walk normally. Which feels so weird. But way less expensive than what the copay was gonna be.
Progress!
