On the advice of the GotMead.com forum-goers, it turns out I do need the raisins. So I bought a six-pack of Nice! raisin boxes, put twelve or thirteen into the mead, and stirred it a bit. Also, I switched the muslin out for a couple layers of saran-wrap, since mead needs a bit of internal pressure. The mead is now fizzing enough for me to hear it,
