Ups and downs.

Up: Breakfast was ready. Coffee -- seen lurking in a blue mug off to the lower right -- was being imbibed.

I was ready to make lunch. In fact, I'd make two sandwiches and consolidated the many frozen nubs of bread into two categories: a few random whole slices, okay for toast, and random tiny heels, suitable for bread crumbs.

That was when I knocked the cup of black coffee, about 16 ounces, all over the freaking table and my sandwich. The air turned blue and I was literally throwing things on the floor (avoiding the pool of coffee) in anger.

Got over it, took pictures of emerging spring, said goodbye to Ms Max:

Rode bike to work, had a day that was mostly productive, rode up to Capitol Hill, saw therapist, joined up with Seth to ride home. Took the turnoff to head up to 45th/Trader Joe's in the U-District and as I crossed 45th, my freaking pedal parted ways with my poor little crank.

Frustrating! But lucky, because I was riding with Seth; because I didn't freak out when it happened and managed to safely pull over; because a bus that goes ride to my 'hood runs down 45th regularly; because it was Friday night; because it's a problem money can solve and therefore it's not that big of a problem. (Not that I'm flush, exactly, but you know what I mean.)

So, now we're going bike shopping. I'll replace the crank eventually and we're going to try replacing a pedal on this crank, but it reminds me of what many people have told me about buying a new car after driving used for years and years. "I never knew how much stress I was under driving it! The payments were nothing, totally worth it." I love my Mercian but right now, I'm going to see if I can come home with a not-too-spendy, comfortable, fun-to-ride commuter bike. I kinda need something to ride in the Chilly Hilly next weekend, at least! (The cost is likely to put a damper on yarn & fabric shopping but nothing's going to stop me from picking up at least one treat from each place.)

But seeing how yesterday went--nothing according to expectations--it could turn out rather differently. I'll be sure to let you know.
