I have backed myself into a corner, where my understanding of weather forecasts and of statistics collide. I've never been really wild about statistics; it's a numbers-dance that I understand the purpose of, and as a scientist have had to use, but am just as likely to be bamboozled by numberical hand-waving as the average citizen ( Read more... )

The other night making dinner I knocked over the salt shaker.  I stood it back up but I didn't wipe up the spill.   Next morning there was an array of little droplets of saltwater, as each little crystal absorbed enough water to liquefy it.

What is the difference between a "wallpaper scraper" and a "putty knife"?  They are both wide metal half-moon-like blades on a hand-sized plastic stick.  I'm guessing that - contrary to the thing you might guess from the names, the scraper is a sharpened blade that could actually cut you, whereas the knife is more of a spatula thing, not in fact a ( Read more... )
