Mine Mine Mine

I come across something on one of my friend's pages and it irritates me to no end. If you are on her list then you may have seen the comment. I won't drag specific names because it doesn't matter. It's the action that irritates me and I’ve heard of similar instances before ( Read more... )

Ugh, ME TOO! Her reply was SO good I wanted to cheer. But really, what a twit!! And apart from the whole "dibs" thing, it was a really insensitive way to do it. Right in her first "yay! coco!" post, and happy planning, just to jump in there with no comment about the rest of it, nothing nice at all, just "MINE." GRRRRRR!

Okay, so I went and hunted down the conversation in question, and as soon as I saw who made the "dibs" comment I basically slapped my forehead and said "Oh of COURSE SHE DID."

I had this friend once who we used to say lived in Sarah World. In Sarah World, everything was about Sarah. All the boys liked Sarah, if Sarah got passed over for an award or promotion it was clearly because the powers that be did not recognize the fabulousness of Sarah, and Sarah was just generally the center of the universe.

I believe this is an example of Sarah World Syndrome. I don't follow her LJ now, but I used to. Granted, this was a few years ago now, but it was all just too much for Katie. Considering what I've seen in the past, the "dibs" thing doesn't come as a surprise at all.

Interesting. I've rarely seen her around, mostly on public or the occasional other friend entry; I think she's in a "circle" I'm not really interested in.

Totally theorizing here, but maybe she threw that out there to see if the OP would back off. Instead, Christy and Maggie took her to task, and she had to back down herself pretty quickly or look like a jerk.

So: Go Christy and Maggie!

I agree with your theory; the "haha totally joking" thing reads as backpedaling to me, and also kind of fits in with her perceived 'age group' (no idea how old she really is, just where her behavior slotted her back when I was reading her stuff ( ... )

I have no idea the conversation you're talking about, so I must not know the person.

I see this all the time in the con community. It's irritating. I get that people are trying to be "special" and so they want to play like they are being original, but dude, the whole intent of the costume is COPYING an image from pop/geek culture that you thought was awesome. Even the whole, "so and so copied off of me because I did a genre riff off of that character" business (ie the steampunk version of ____, or lady version of ____, or zombie version of ___) is starting to irritate me now. I understood it in the beginning when someone did an exact copy of a friend's Lady Joker, but pretty much most of the other arguments are just stupid and petty.

I ended up replying. But to your comment because I didn't totally want to start something. But really. You can't just call "dibs" on something you might someday do. There are limited numbers of resources for all of us to share. Ugh, so frustrating! Hopefully she was joking. :-/

I really liked your response. She responded, and said she was joking, but caveat that "as long as no one thinks I copied you." Like what is she supposed to do? Follow her around and say "She liked it first"? It was really rather stupid to joke with such a sensitive topic.

Oh good, glad it was a joke. It wasn't a good one, especially for someone as conscientious as the OP is. Because I know she would be considerate of other people, even when, in this case, she shouldn't have had to be... And yeah, it's definitely a sensitive topic.

I agree! I'm so glad it's a joke too, although sadly not a good one since there are so many people out there who are really serious about the "dibs" thing. *sigh*

I have to agree with you on this - it drives me crazy when people do this! I really don't understand why people get all bent out of shape when you are both COPYING someone else's design. An original design - totally. Two of the same thing being worn to the same event - yeah I can see the annoyance. But otherwise, really?! Like we don't all use/copy the same fashion plates and extant garments over and over again. If it didn't come completely out of your own head or you don't legally own the exclusive rights to something you can't call dibs, period ( ... )

Thankfully, she said that she was just joking about the "dibs" thing, so that's a huge relief. I'm really glad she's being cool about it. Her first reply was so short that I really couldn't tell.

That's exactly what I thought. I stared at it, trying to get a sense of either joke or serious, and I couldn't. Your reply was stellar, saying right out that you couldn't tell if she was joking! :D
