I have to agree with you on this - it drives me crazy when people do this! I really don't understand why people get all bent out of shape when you are both COPYING someone else's design. An original design - totally. Two of the same thing being worn to the same event - yeah I can see the annoyance. But otherwise, really?! Like we don't all use/copy the same fashion plates and extant garments over and over again. If it didn't come completely out of your own head or you don't legally own the exclusive rights to something you can't call dibs, period.

Having someone else make the dress you wanted to make can sometimes take the bloom off of a project I know but calling dibs isn't fair or frankly practial.

The challenge should be making it your own. Making it the version of that thing that only YOU, as an artist, can make. Personally I love seeing multiple people make the same thing - the fun is that they are always different, reflecting their creator in some way. That unique combination of skill, inclination, interpretation, fabric finds, compromises, taste, body type, coloring that we all have makes for such interesting variations. So much more fun than "mine, mine" fights.
