I've just now had to put Beauty down... such a turn of phrase. The vet and her helpers at the Centretown Veterinary Hospital were exceedingly kind, and she went very quickly after the sedative was injected into her catheter; the doctor provided me with a fur clipping in a small, pretty nylon purse. I'll be staying in the East-End of Montreal for the next week, taking care of my father's (mother's) dogs and Beauty (my cat) while he vacations in Newfoundland.

My great ambition, I think, is to become nothing less than the most brilliant of the hairless apes of my age; though, given the range of competition, I doubt the probability of amounting to the measure of an Ada Lovelace or Albert Einstein. Cat's & dogs are two very different animals. If you were to fall down dead in your apartment one night, your loyal canine may very well lay down beside you & die of heatbreak. A cat, on the otherhand, would sit calmly by your side, eye your still-cooling corpse, and make a critical decision on which part it should eat first.
