Read, watch, whinge, cheer

Several years ago I swore that I would never read the series of Sherlock Holmes stories written by American author Laurie R King http://www.laurierking.com/books/mary-russell because her original character, Mary Russell, sounded like the ultimate Mary Sue. But recently, since I wanted something pertaining to Sherlock to take to read on holiday, I succumbed to a second had copy of The Beekeeper's Apprentice... and found myself enjoying it.

Apart from one total screw up regarding British pre-decimal currency, which let's face it, most of her readership wouldn't pick up on being a) American and/or b) not old enough to have used British pre-decimal currency (certainly her editor wasn't and didn't) I found the novel entertaining. The overall premise that a retired Holmes in his late fifties would take up with a female student is utterly preposterous. However having got over that hump the subsequent adventure was fun. So now I'm on the second in the series and looking around for a copy of the third...

Was pleased to see a second series of Case Histories starring Jason Isaacs back on the small screen showcasing Edinburgh yesterday evening. Was not so pleased to have a phone call from my mother this morning basically asking me to explain the entire plot. At least I had understood it myself. (If she'd asked me about Doctor Who I would've been in trouble!) These televised episodes about private detective Jackson Brodie bear little relation to the original novels written by Kate Atkinson, but just enough of the books bubble up to render things quite confusing at times.

I'm so fed up with the weather! It's been largely grey and overcast, if not actually raining, for over a year now. Temperatures are lousy and it's just downright dull and depressing. Forecast for later this week is for temperatures to get even lower - which means struggling to reach double figures. I've forgotten what blue sky looks like. Blah.

But here's something interesting for the end of the year... a Donmar production of Coriolanus with the lovely Tom Hiddleston in the title role. Also involving Mark Gatiss. http://www.donmarwarehouse.com/whats-on/new-season-2013/coriolanus And it's already been announced that it will be broadcast as part of NT Live at the end of January. Huzzah!
