5. New faces, New friends?
KikwangThey were all seated on the dining table once more, later that night.
It was their usual dinner for the past few days that they were here: They would be served what was called a ‘special meal’ made by the chef because it was a ‘special day’. But these ‘special meals’ happened everyday because they were one of the few guests that are here. But they weren’t complaining, the food here was better than most of the random, non-major restaurants they’ve tasted on Seoul.
They would then be usually accompanied by the cheerful Gayoon noona, who usually sat beside them or stand behind them. There would be a few chit chats here and there, sometimes started by Gayoon noona, but nothing serious.
But today it was quiet - it was unusually quiet. Kikwang looked at everyone. He looked at Doojoon, who had his cheek resting atop his palm which rested on the table, and was playing with his food nonchalantly. He looked at Junhyung, who was just sitting still and looking at his food, lips pursed and occasionally looking somewhere else, as if expecting something. He looked at Hyunseung, who seemed the strangest - he was eating, but he seemed different, closing his eyes for a long time, shaking his head, breathing in and out slowly. He looked at his lover beside him - Dongwoon - who seemed indifferent, eating casually like he always would. Kikwang scrunched his eyebrows.
Why was the three acting strange… probably something happened that he and Dongwoon didn’t know about - well, that’s probably because the two of them have spent most of the time here sleeping in each other’s arms, being the sleepyheads that they were. Kikwang - being the innocent and oblivious boy that he is - decided to bring out the topic.
“Hey” he started, which didn’t get their attention. He cleared his throat. “Hey, guys…hyungs” he emphasized the last word, making all of them look at him, including their mankae, Dongwoon. When they looked up at him, Kikwang suddenly felt uncomfortable, the way they were staring at him. He bluntly shrugged it off - or at least tried to - their stares looked downright serious and tense.
“What’s up with you all…you’re acting weird all night…” he trailed off, already feeling uncomfortable with all their stares.
The rain was still strong outside, and up until now it showed no signs of stopping and it was the first time Kikwang saw a storm this long…probably a freak storm or something.
“Umm…I mean - what did you guys do today? Anything interesting happened today?” He finished it with a weird, obviously fake laugh, and now it sounded awkward as it echoed around the room, bouncing off the walls.
There was no response after that, and Kikwang bit the inside of his cheeks, wanting to hide behind Dongwoon after being ignored.
“Today….” Dongwoon answered, titling his head to the right and thinking and thank God Dongwoon was there to save Kikwang from further awkwardness. Dongwoon laughed, “Well, today I was with you the whole time, Kiki…and all we do is sleep…so yeah” he laughed again, and Kikwang nodded at him halfheartedly.
It was quiet again when Junhyung - who was at the other end of the table - suddenly cleared his throat. Kikwang looked up at him. “…Gayoon noona?” Junhyung called.
Gayoon, who was at the side, turned to Junhyung, with her warm smile on her face. “Yes Junhyungah?” “Oh..umm, could you plese get me…or us rather…some more water? Ah, Thank You” Junhyung added the last part upon seeing Gayoon smile brightly before nodding, turning her back to them and walking out with the usual ‘clacking’ of her heels.
Junhyung watched Gayoon until she was out of the room. The moment she disappeared his small polite smile suddenly disappeared. He suddenly turned serious as he turned his head back to the others. That caught the attention of all, seeing that Junhyung was never the type to get so worked up about something.
“Junhyung? What’s up? Kikwang asked with a slight quake in his voice. Junhyung breathed out.
“Guys…” he started. Everyone was looking at him. “…we’ve been here for a couple of days now…weeks maybe…” He bit his lip every now and then, having a hard time trying to convey what he trying to say.
“Don’t…don’t you guys notice?”
Everyone looked at him with confused looks. “Notice what?” Doojoon asked. Junhyung scrunched his eyebrows. “I mean… you guys don’t see? In the hallways…in rooms…”
“…Haven’t you guys met him…? Yang Yoseob?”
Suddenly, at the mention of his name, the atmosphere changed. Doojoon blinked, looking at Junhyung now with more interest, Hyunseung suddenly make a weird noise as he gripped his utensils harder, while Kikwang and Dongwoon remained looking at Junhyung with confused faces. Kikwang tilted his head. He’s heard about Yoseob from Doojoon, and he’s certain that he’s seen him too, during the first days of their stay. He seemed normal - at least to Kikwang - but having them all react like this…
“I…I don’t know…I just…” Junhyung leaned forward a bit. “Doesn’t he seem… a bit odd to you guys? A little…too different? I asked Gayoon noona about him, but all she did was shrug it off and told me that he just comes here often and… he’s really bothersome so it’s best not to mingle with him…but…it doesn’t...feel that way does it? At least… to me it doesn’t…that’s why I wanted to ask you guys…while noona isn’t here - “
“Here’s your water guys! Sorry I took so long!” They all stopped and turned their heads at the sudden voice, the tense atmosphere disappearing as fast as it came. Kikwang took a quick glance to Junhyung, who puffed out of his cheeks and slumped back on his chair.
“Ah, Thank you noona…” Junhyung muttered.
Kikwang blinked, lips puckered, not knowing how to respond to what just happened.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
“Heeey! Woonie!!” Kikwang smacked the back of Dongwoon for the hundredth time, the younger still not responding. He was lying face down on the bed, long arms and legs spread out towards the four corners, while Kikwang was standing in front of the bed, hands on hips, with an irritated pout on his lips.
“Yah” Kikwang scowled. Silence. “Yah. Son Dongwoon” he repeated, still receiving no answer. “Yaaah, Dongwoon! I know you’re not sleeping! I wanna play!!” he finally gave up his strict tone and whined, wiggling his arms like a child. Dongwoon finally looked up. “Eeehh, let’s sleep first hyung!”
“We always sleep! It’s boring! Let’s go out together for once!” Kikwang said. “How do you know it’s boring when you sleep, since you’re asleep yourself?” Dongwoon paused, not understanding what he had just said. He shrugged, “Still, I think sleeping is nice. The only way I’m going with you is if I get out of this bed”
Kikwang’s face scrunched up. “That’s it!” he finally said, going over to the side of the bed. He grabbed Dongwoon's arm and leg and pulled, hard.
“Kiki, wha - AH!” Dongwoon yelled upon falling down to the floor. Kikwang stood on top of him, arms crossed, with a slight smile on his face.
“You’re off the bed”
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
They were walking - or at least Kikwang was skipping, and Dongwoon was getting dragged behind - hand in hand around the ground floor.
“Yah…Yah Yah! Lee Kikwang, will you please slow down a bit?” Dongwoon whined as Kikwang gripped his hand tighter. “Aish! You’re just slow! You should exercise more Woonie~” Kikwang retorted, reaching the hallway leading the front lobby. Dongwoon opened his mouth to retort when Kikwang suddenly stopped, causing the younger to crash into him.
“Ouch! Kiki, why did you stop?!” Dongwoon rubbed his forehead. He looked in front of Kikwang, before mouthing his lips into a small ‘o’ upon seeing a figure carrying tons of luggage appear before them. A head suddenly popped up among the luggage.
“Hi Gayoon noona!” Kikwang cheerfully greeted. “What’s up with all the bags?” Gayoon smiled, “Ah, there are a bunch of new guests here; I’m bringing their stuff up to their rooms!” Gayoon looked excited, very excited, seeing that they weren’t the only people here. “Oh, you want us to help noona?”
“Ah, no need~ no need, I got this” she quickly cut off Kikwang’s offer with an enthusiastic smile, with that, she quickly went past Kikwang and walked off in the opposite direction. They two looked at her until Dongwoon suddenly felt the hand around his tighten once more. Dongwoon looked questioningly at him. “Wha-?”
The rest was cut off - again - as the sound of footsteps approached. Soon it was joined by voices. “Ah, I hope the rain ends soon!” “Yeah, it’s so weird, it was raining too hard while ago…” Kikwang raised his eyebrows, ‘wasn’t raining too hard?’ Before long the voices came closer, until it revealed at bunch of girls. Kikwang and Dongwoon stayed silent on the side of the hall, the four girls still not noticing their presence.
“Hey, you g…” One of them started, only to fade out once they had noticed the two. It was quiet now - the two groups walking past each other. The moment was long. It was long and strange and so utterly quiet as the girls past them. Soon, after the four had gone out of view, Kikwang could hear them start their chatter again.
“Ahh, so we weren’t the only ones here?” “Yeah~ and that smaller boy looks so cute!” “Yah! Min, you’re so loud! They could hear us!”
Kikwang blinked, turning to face Dongwoon. Dongwoon shrugged. “That was weird…” he simply said before Kikwang suddenly chuckled at his bluntness and pulling him once more. “Let’s go”
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Thunder struck the sky.
Kikwang and Dongwoon were walking - still - and by now Dongwoon was a grumpy mess while Kikwang remained enthusiastic as they ventured different halls of the place.
“Kiki! I’m bored now! Let’s go back and sleep!” Kikwang looked at Dongwoon beside him, who was now curling up into his arms. Kikwang pouted, shrugging off the other. “You’re such a baby, and it’s only been an hour, you can’t expect something wonderful to happen every now and then! Besides, it’s better than sleeping. You think sleeping is better than everything”
“Well, anything is better than this!” Dongwoon retorted. Kikwang scrunched his eyebrows. “Just you wait Son Dongwoon” They reached a hall somewhere in the third floor.
London Bridge is falling down…
Kikwang blinked. Before long, the humming grew louder as a boy came around the corner.
…London Bridge is falling down…
The boy hummed gently, slowly getting closer to the pair. In his hands was a doll - it was a plush doll, the ones that had stuffing in them. The doll an exotic dark brown skin tone, the sapphire blue dress adorning the skin. But something was wrong with it - its right arm had came off, it was ripped sloppily, some cotton already falling out of the doll. The boy was fixing it though, he was slowly sewing the arm back.
Kikwang looked at the boy - who kept his eyes cast down on the doll as he hummed - as he began to take a step forward -
Suddenly Kikwang felt a hand grip at his wrist as Dongwoon quickly grabbed him and pulled him back. Kikwang looked at his boyfriend, and before he had a chance to say anything, Dongwoon suddenly spoke out in a hushed and frantic manner.
“Kikwangie” his voice was breathy as he whispered.”You don’t know? That’s Yang Yoseob! The one Junhyung hyung’s been talking about last night!” Dongwoon’s eyes shifted to Yoseob to see if he had heard, but the other still kept sewing, slowly walking closer - much closer - to them. Kikwang’s mouth gaped open slightly, also turning back to the boy. Now that he looked at the boy more…yes, yes he is Yoseob. The boy he saw the day they came here.
“You should avoid him! Remember what Junhyung hyung said?!” he heard Dongwoon continue, still facing Yoseob.
Out of nowhere, a thought suddenly came into Kikwang’s head.
Waaiiit, why should he avoid that boy?
He didn’t do anything wrong did he?
Poor Yoseob, that boy is probably just lonely… he needs some friends!
…maybe…I should be friends with him
Kikwang nodded challengingly to himself, a bold smile going to his face. He muttered back to Dongwoon.
“Why should we? I’ll go and talk to him” With that, he approached Yoseob, leaving Dongwoon on the same spot, who by now has his jaw dropped and eye’s widened.
“No! Yah, Lee Kikwang, what the hell are you thinking?! Argh! I have a bad feeling about this… I knew sleeping was a better idea!” he said to himself, all manners disappearing from his voice as he chased after Kikwang.
But soon the next thing he saw was Kikwang rushing over to Yoseob’s side, cheerfully greeting the other. Yoseob slowly stopped sewing, eye’s glancing up to Kikwang with a blank expression, still quiet. Dongwoon gulped as he thought -
This will be bad, really bad…
