4. Soulless Creatures
Hyunseung
The door shut close.
“Fuck…I have had enough of this!” he cried. He bolted for the door, reaching his hand out to escape from this place -
Suddenly there was a voice from the corner of the room, a calm, melodious voice -
“Don’t run… you might break another one of my dolls…”
___________________________________________________________
Hyunseung skidded to a halt. He tried his best not to belt out another yell upon hearing the voice that came out of nowhere in the dark room.
Now as pale as a ghost, Hyunseung turned around - panting - eyes wide and feeling very panicked.
He felt even more disrupt when he saw the source of the voice.
It was Yoseob. When did he come in here?
Yoseob stood at the far corner of the room, blank, emotionless eyes were staring right at him and they seemed to burn holes in Hyunseung. He had his head tiled to the side a bit, on his hand he clutched another one of those dolls -
- He was holding the doll that Hyunseung broke.
And right now, he has seen so much - too much - that he can’t seem to register anything. So right now, his mind was too downright panicked and blurry to even think about what he was saying or what he was about to say.
“W-what…?” he asked bluntly, shakily. He raised his hands awkwardly, not knowing where to place it where it would feel awkward or uncomfortable with Yoseob staring at him.
“Don’t run… you already broke one of my dolls…” Yoseob repeated solemnly, voice monotone, hand stroking the hair of the broken doll.
“Your…dolls…?” He asked, just as blunt as before. He slowly looked around the room, looking at all of the dolls.
They were all…his?
So this was…his room?
“You mean…this is all yours?”
“The world is cruel. They only destroy those who do not deserve to be gone from this world…all of those innocent people…” Yoseob continued, completely ignoring Hyunseung’s questions. His head was now looking down instead of Hyunseung. He was talking to himself…or rather talking to the doll.
“Do you deserve it?” he asked the doll, his fair hands going down to stroke the face of the doll. Hyunseung could only watch, afraid to interfere. “Would I…deserve…it? Did I…?” Yoseob said faintly, but enough for Hyunseung to hear.
Yoseob’s head suddenly looked back up to Hyunseung, only now his eyes weren’t expressionless, it wasn’t blank. Now it had intensified. He was looking at Hyunseung seriously, a cold spark in his eyes.
“Why are you here?”
Hyunseung almost choked on his own words. “I…I well…I-I… you see - I’m sorry… I -“ he stuttered, unable to answer properly under Yoseob’s intensifying gaze. But then again, even without Yoseob there, he still wouldn’t be able to answer.
“I’m sorry, I was walking…and…and well - I got curious and…” he managed, hands going up to try and loosen the collar of his shirt which to him had somehow gotten tighter.
“Oh…? You don’t…dislike…these things?” Yoseob said, monotone voice coming back, his gaze returning to those cold yet innocent ones. “I don’t know why I have these things…but…I don’t dislike them either…” he said. Hyunseung noticed his fingers went to trace the cracks on the doll he was holding.
“H-Hey…I’m sorry…about your doll…” Hyunseung cautiously said. “It was an accident…I bumped into it and…”
“Some say dolls like these are creepy…scary…” Yoseob said, standing up, holding the doll by its arm, letting it fall limp on his side. He walked across the room, Hyunseung following him with his gaze. He stopped walking, tilting his head slightly towards Hyunseung. “…You don’t think that?” he asked glumly.
“Well…at first…but now…” he trailed off, not really sure on what to say. His experience with those dolls a few minutes ago had frightened the hell out of him, but now that he felt less…hectic... he started to notice the beauty in the dolls, those little details that even made him admire them. Hyunseung didn’t know why…but he felt tired all of a sudden.
Yoseob nodded upon hearing his statement, turning his head away from him. Hyunseung hesitated at first, but now he found himself curious once more as he slowly went to where Yoseob was. He found himself looking at a doll which Yoseob has his eyes at.
The doll had dark violet hair - almost black - that was straight and curved a bit on the ends. The doll had full bangs and wore a black corset with roses on it. It had a small rose hat adorned on its head.
“This is my favorite” Yoseob said. He reached out his hand to tuck a few strands of hair behind the ear of the doll. “She looks so…peaceful”
“It’s strange to me…that they can look so calm… Like there are no problems in the world…even though they are surrounded by nightmares and the cruelty of this world. Everyday…” he muttered. Hyunseung wasn’t sure if Yoseob was talking to him or to himself.
“E-eh…well… maybe that’s why she’s so happy, because she’s found a solution to her problems…” Hyunseung said. It felt strange to him, talking about something non-living as if it was alive. As if it had a soul. As if it had a life. He would normally want to say that he found it stupid, but strangely, it wasn’t. Now that he and Yoseob were talking about it, strangely, it didn’t feel silly at all, just…out of the ordinary.
“Impossible.” Hyunseung blinked at Yoseob’s blunt reply.
“There are always problems in this world. Even if you find a solution or not, another dilemma’s bound to surface again. But some problems really don’t have a solution, whether you like it or not…”
“Ah…” Hyunseung replied, not really knowing how to reply to this. Yoseob suddenly turned around to face him.
“Do you feel…different?” he suddenly asked Hyunseung. “Different?” Hyunseung asked.
“Don’t you feel…weaker? Ill?” Hyunseung’s eyes widened at his statement. He felt bewildered, because right now, he felt uneasy, he felt like his chest has gotten tired and he needed a rest. “This isn’t a good place for you…for people… since you are not used to it…” Yoseob trailed off. “Not a good place…?” Hyunseung repeated.
“Nothing is perfect in this world. Alive or not. Even these dolls.” Yoseob started walking once more, leaving Hyunseung the choice of following him or not. Hyunseung, gathering courage once more, trudged forward, following Yoseob. “That’s why everything seeks to gain that thing they are missing. To try to overcome their flaws and imperfections. They want to be perfect” They walked further away from the door, to the deeper part of the room.
“The dolls…” he said, still clutching the broken doll in his hand. “Dolls are hollow…completely hollow in body and in soul.” They stopped at an old, wooden desk. On that desk was what seemed to be a doll. But this doll wasn’t finished, It had a face, a body… but it lacked some parts of its limbs. It was completely naked, and only had one arm. It had a left leg, but its right leg was cut down to its thigh only.
“This doll was never finished…It would now just forever like this, waiting. Waiting for someone to finish it.” Yoseob said. “But I still keep it” he added solemnly
“Dolls are soulless creatures. That’s what connects them to death. That’s why they are deemed dead and nonliving, because they are completely hollow…” Yoseob continued from his past statement.
“Everything wants so be perfect, so all hollow things seek to fill out their emptiness. All of those soulless creatures, they seek out souls for themselves…” Yoseob turned to him, and Hyunseung could just make out a small - ever so slight - smirk on the other’s lips.
“Don’t you feel as if there’s something being drawn out of you? Like…this place…is getting your soul?” Yoseob narrowed his eyes slightly, very tiny smirk still in place. Hyunseung gulped, already close to hyperventilating.
“W-wha…” he tried to talk, but right now the impact of what Yoseob said caused his throat to dry. Suddenly he felt dizzy. He looked around - like the whole world was spinning - and saw all the dolls.
All the dolls that faced him.
London Bridge is falling down…
…falling down…
…falling down…
Hyunseung cringed, grunting as he stumbled backwards. He clamped his hand on his mouth, shaking, as he panted heavily. Everything around him was blurry.
…my fair lady…
He ran his hands through his hair - pulling at them - looking everywhere and seeing those dolls, the faint light of the room flickering above their faces, as if their eyes were following Hyunseung.
He saw Yoseob, still staring at him with the same blank haunting expression, unmoving - eyes just black pits of cold innocence. He simply just dolefully watched, despite the other looking in terribly bad shape and was now breaking down in cold sweat.
…London Bridge is falling down…
Each line was louder than the other. Each line was rougher than the other, and each line hurt his ears than the other. Hyunseung just wanted everything to stop stop stop. He glanced up at Yoseob with wide eyes, Yoseob was suddenly staring at him with sad eyes. He raised up his finger to his lips, telling him to keep quiet.
“You should go. This place isn’t safe for anyone” Yoseob tilted his head to the side -
“I’m sorry…you shouldn’t have gone here….” He finished quietly. Yoseob looked down, and in a split second, his eyes seemed to flicker. In that split second, it was as if a switch was turned in Yoseob. Hyunseung could only watch, terrified, as the innocent spark in Yoseob eyes disappeared.
Yoseob looked up, and he had a small smile on his face. He smiled, but the smile was dark, mysterious, and almost evil. He looked at Hyunseung, his dark eyes staring right at Hyunseung.
“Leave. Before you end up dead in here… Jang…Hyun…Seung…”
The next thing he knew, he was running.
He was running out of the room, away from Yoseob, away from all the dolls. He ran through the dark hallway, not daring to look back.
London Bridge is -
Hyunseung cried out, covering his eyes. The tune was still playing, from the room or just in his mind, he didn’t know, he just wanted everything to stop.
He was running. He ran all the way to the door of his room, hands shaking very badly as it took him several attempt to grab the doorknob and twist it open -
He finally did, and he stumbled to his room.
The next thing he knew, everything was black.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hyunseung snapped up, eyes wide, panting.
He looked around him, seeing his room in the motel. He was sweating. Hyunseung looked down to find himself in bed. He looked up again.
What…was that?
“Hey” Hyunseung snapped his head to the source of the voice. It was Junhyung. He was standing by the window. “Had a nice nap?” Hyunseung blinked, not knowing how to answer that.
Was everything that just happened…only a dream?
He shook his head. He closed his eyes and tried to recall the events -
Suddenly, a flash of images appeared on Hyunseung’s mind.
The hallway.
The room.
The dolls.
Yoseob.
He snapped his eyes open. The images just now were so vivid, so real. He blnked, until he felt Junhyung’s stare on him. He looked up, panting a bit. Junhyung was looking at him worriedly.
“Seung, you okay?” he asked, going over to Hyunseung. Hyunseung raised his hand when Junhyung was going closer, causing Junhyung to stop. “Ah, I…I’m okay” He said, voice still a little rough… probably because he just woke up.
Before Junhyung had the chance to continue, Hyunseung got out of bed. He walked towards the door. “I’ll just go out for a while” he said to Junhyung, getting out of the room.
Once he was out, he leaned on the wall, breathing deeply. He closed his eyes tightly, trying to remember what had happened after his encounter with Yoseob.
London Bridge is falling down…
…falling down…
Hyunseung snapped his eyes open upon hearing the tune play out in his head.
…falling down…
Hyunseung’s eyes widened.
No, it wasn’t in his head. The tune came coming from somewhere, someone was humming it. Slowly it got louder until Hyunseung could recognize the source of the petrifying song. He tensed up, already feeling the presence of that person get closer.
Yoseob came into view on his left.
He was looking straight ahead, eyes not even paying a since glance to Hyunseung. His eyes were once more the monotonous ones, face unmoving as he slowly hummed. Hyunseung kept staring as Yoseob was walking past him…
…to the dark hallway…
…to his room….
“H-hey…” Hyunseung tried to call Yoseob, trying to see if Yoseob would respond. Still, the other just kept walking. Does this mean that it was all just a dream?
Hyunseung looked at Yoseob some more. That was when he saw it.
The doll he was holding -
It was the exact doll that he had broken. It still was damaged, it still had the cracks and gaps on it. Then for a quick moment there Hyunseung could sense Yoseob’s stare on him as he past Hyunseung.
…my fair lady…
Yoseob disappeared into the darkness of the hallway. Hyunseung paled, turning white.
Everything that had happened was true.
It was real.
