One hundred years ago today...

...it was announced by the court of the Kingdom of the Mists, temporarily represented in the wake of recent tragedy by Duke Sylvester Torquill of Shadowed Hills, whose Duchy had been mercifully spared from the bulk of the damages, that the body of King Galen Windermere of the Mists had been recovered from his San Francisco home, and that the regency of the Kingdom was now under question. Word had been sent to King and Queen Sollys, but the speed of their response was in no way assured.

King Windermere had never married, and died without leaving any known heirs.

Two days later, a claim to the throne would be lain by a woman who refused to give her proper name, but who was backed by the authority of Countess Evening Winterrose of Goldengreen, long a friend and supporter of King Windermere's court. In the absence of another claim, and bearing in mind the need for stability within the kingdom following the massive, unexpected loss of life, property, and serenity caused by the earthquake, her claim would be allowed, and she would be sworn in as Queen of the Mists on the first of May, 1906.

All else, it can safely be said, simply followed from there.
