Game console... any thoughts?

I've been thinking lately about getting a game console. The last one I owned was a ColecoVision, in the early eighties. I've always been more of a PC gamer, but lately have had less of an inclination to spend a couple thousand bucks every other year to buy what has essentially become for me an expensive gaming / email machine. I don't do anything ( Read more... )

Dave's roommates play PC games all the time, including crazy ones that are emulations of prior gaming systems, and cracked & translated versions of Japanese adventure text games. So from what I've recently been exposed to, I would say the PC is the way to go... also if you want to play Halo, get an Xbox, I'm sure that game has sold many Xboxes.

oh... I figured you were weighing in in favour of getting another PC in view of its other uses, ie going on the internet. My computer was around $800, but I don't play games on it. :D

Dave's buddies have the gaming/TV watching PC beside the TV in the living room, and they play together... though sometimes they play their PSPs beside each other on teh couch. ha ha I think they play a lot of Grand Theft Auto, and many things that require me an explanation before I understand.

Addictive games? Don't get World of Warcraft. :D I don't know personally, but there's a work-related person who is addicted it would seem.

Ahhh... mario kart. Can you get a cracked PC playable version of that I wonder? amma wario... and amma gonna ween!

Hmph! The time I could get back if I wasn't online every morning & night. Games are fun for social stuff, I want to download some Commodore 64 simulation software and games for my brother. Choplifter and Mule were fun.

Thanks for the input Steve... that's very helpful. The game selection is probably the single biggest factor for me... not so much numbers, but the kind. I've stood in front of banks of console games a lot in the past couple of weeks, trying to get super-excited about any given console's selection, and while each system seems to have one or two I find appealing, none so far has impressed me with its wide selection of really awesome games. Though really, all it takes is one or two =)

Anyhow, feedback greatly appreciated, especially regarding the PS2 problems, as I've been giving serious thought to buying a used one, and that seems kind of risky, if in fact they're known to have a higher than average % of wiggyness.

With both Sony and Nintendo hoping to launch new consoles this year, it's a tough time to make a choice ( ... )

Thanks, very insightful. I have a soft spot for MarioKart, and would almost buy a Gamecube just for that. Well, and maybe the Mario 'wacky sports' type games, like golf ( ... )

MarioKart on the Nintendo DS is crack. (and WiFi is built into the DS, which isn't touted well enough) Playing this game with friends wirelessly whether in the room or on the net is super fun.

Otherwise, the "platform" lacks titles.

I know nothing about the DS... is it newer than the successor to the GameCube? I may look into it, if it's still new, and will have more titles available eventually.
