Game console... any thoughts?

I've been thinking lately about getting a game console. The last one I owned was a ColecoVision, in the early eighties. I've always been more of a PC gamer, but lately have had less of an inclination to spend a couple thousand bucks every other year to buy what has essentially become for me an expensive gaming / email machine. Thanks, very insightful. I have a soft spot for MarioKart, and would almost buy a Gamecube just for that. Well, and maybe the Mario 'wacky sports' type games, like golf.

The PS2 certainly does seem to win in the diversity of titles department, though I'm not really into a lot of the heavily manga inspired fighting games and 'tactical' rpgs, which seem to account for a large chunk of the PS2 titles out there (at least, the ones I've seen). But I have 3 or 4 friends I don't see much anymore who have PS2's, and I think it would be fun to play online with them.

To answer your question, I'm irritatingly picky about the kind of games I play, but in general I enjoy a good 'make your own characters' rpg, first-person games with atmosphere, and turn-based strategy games (which are sadly uncommon nowadays). A good combat racer comes along every now and then that turns my crank too. In general, I prefer games that can be played in co-op multiplayer mode too, so in some ways I'm partially basing my opinion of the various consoles on the number and quality of multiplayer games (split screen and online) available to them.

MarioKart on the Nintendo DS is crack. (and WiFi is built into the DS, which isn't touted well enough) Playing this game with friends wirelessly whether in the room or on the net is super fun.

Otherwise, the "platform" lacks titles.

I know nothing about the DS... is it newer than the successor to the GameCube? I may look into it, if it's still new, and will have more titles available eventually.

It's not a console, but a handheld. Dorkier than the PSP, but the games are funner.
