Billy had a load of laundry in a basket and was looking for a place to take care of laundry-type things. He was decidedly un-Horrible, he'd already made the decision to keep things low-profile ever since the whole stabbing...killing...thing. Now that he was set up in a new place he didn't need people making the connection between himself and the evil future conqueror of the city.

Of course, it was easier in Los Angeles. Nobody knew who Billy was because nobody cared who Billy was, and it was a huge city. He could be one of a few million people. He'd learned since that there weren't all that many people with access to Bete Noire's network and had been kind of found out once already.

Still, he wasn't going to just give up on keeping the identity a secret after one or two minor hitches. And before that, he had to worry about clean clothes and oh god, redhead coming down the hall.

Billy ducked his head, getting intensely interested in his underwear. His underwear was on top of the pile and in full view, he flailed at the basket in an ( ... )

As the man mumbled a greeting at her, Bonnie smiled sweetly in return. She was about to keep going, head to her room--but then she noticed the man's face and had an immediate flashback to Rowan.

Billy? Or Barney?

She paused beside him, peering at his face a bit as he was rearranging his clothes. Too fidgety to be Barney. Should she ask him? But no, that hadn't worked well so far. Telling Ianto that she'd met him in another world had only resulted in him getting a little weirded out.

"Are you new here?" she asked instead. Smiled again and held out her hand. "I'm Bonnie. I don't think I've seen you around before."

OHGOD she responded. Billy flailed internally for a few seconds while he tried to put together a coherent kind of reply...

"...yes. New. To the, uh..." Gesturing was out, with the basket in his hands, but he managed with a head-ish kind of gesture. "To this place. The hostel. And the, um, the city too really. Juuuust got here."

Did that sound defensive? Maybe it sounded a little defensive. Where he was from people didn't recognize him out of costume because...well, they just didn't. They usually just weren't paying that much attention to Billy or Dr. Horrible. But that would change someday, oh yes, that would...

He was monologuing. In his head.

"...hi Bonnie," he added lamely.

"Hi--sorry, I didn't catch your name?" she lightly probed. Leaning toward Billy.

If she noticed the internal flailing or monologuing, she did a very good job of not showing it.

"Well, consider me your welcome wagon," she offered cheerfully. "Are you going to or from with the laundry? Do you need any help?"

After Buffy woke up from her coma, Cordelia had started going out and about more, at least during the day. During the night she tried to avoid going out by herself, what with the threat of Angelus and all that. But during the day? She was getting herself better acquainted with the city, finally.

And today, that meant investigating the library. Research was more of Wesley's thing but...he was...well, dead for the moment. She tried to ignore the nagging guilt in her stomach as she flipped through another magic book. He'd come back, right? How many people had told her death wasn't permanent here?

For the most part, she was trying to see what information she could find on sanctuary spells. And resouling. She was reaching for a book when she accidentally took one the other girl was trying to get.

"Sorry."

Bonnie withdrew her hand. "Oh, no! You're fine, go ahead. I'm just browsing anyway." She reached for another book instead--a heavy, dusty tome--and dropped it onto a nearby table. As she did, a poof of dust came flying up at her. She coughed, stepping back.

"Looks like it's been awhile since anyone took a look at these." She dropped her trashy novels onto the table beside the magical tome and turned to introduce herself to the other woman--

And then she blinked. "Wow," was what escaped. "You're like--super pretty." That was followed by a hurried "I'm not hitting on you or anything! Your face is just a really good face. And I mean, I don't like girls. Well, I like girls as friends to, you know, go shopping with or watch movies with or to gossip about and stuff, but not to like--"

There was no good way to finish that sentence.

"Bonnie," she finally blurted out and held out her hand. "I'm Bonnie, sorry."

"Doesn't it? Guessing the library doesn't see a lot of visitors here." She in fact had only known of it's existence due to talking to Buffy about it. With everything that seemed to go in this place she could see how reading wouldn't be a pasttime people would have a lot of time for.

At the compliments, as awkward as they were, Cordelia grinned. It was nice to hear, considering how utterly shitty life had been lately. She certainly hadn't been putting in her normal amount of preparing to look nice.

She laughed a little. "Relax. I don't like girls either, not like that anyways. Though one time I did think a friend of mine was hitting on me but it turned out she was just a vampire and wanted to eat me. So that was awkwardvilles, USA for a bit."

A pause.

"Cordelia."

A few months ago, Bonnie would have frozen at the mention of vampires. Now she was beginning to realize that everyone in Bete Noire seemed to know they existed, or had experienced an encounter. Anyway, no one ever seemed to figure out she was one herself. Having a pulse and going out during the day probably helped a lot with that.

"Most people are too busy fornicating or getting skunked to come to the library," she cheerfully replied, mostly just grateful she wasn't getting a funny look after all her babbling.

"Sorry your friend tried to eat you."

Phoenix was still new at all of this. He still didn't quite understand what was going on, and the idea of never being able to go home simply refused to register for now. But at least he had a place for a bit. (Even Gumshoe could afford someplace that's free.) And while that didn't take care of issues like clothing, food, transportation, and most importantly to help with all of the above, a job, it was better than bumming on the streets or finding a library to sneak naps in.

Although he did make sure to stop at the library and pick up more than a few books on law that were unfamiliar to him. He couldn't very well be a half-decent attorney if he didn't even know the laws of the land, right? On the other hand, he couldn't say with certainty that any, much less all, of the books had anything to do with law in Bete Noire, but he'd sort through them ( ... )

Bonnie had looked up just in time to see a pile of books heading straight for her.

"Oh, I'm so sorry!" she apologized as they came crashing down, even though she wasn't entirely certain it was her fault. Immediately, she knelt down on the floor to help the man gather them up. "Here, let me help you." She looked up at him and returned the smile.

As she gathered up the books, beginning to pile them up, she snuck a few glances at the titles. "Are you in trouble?" she asked, a teasing lilt to her voice. "Or just trying to figure out which laws you can get away with breaking?"

Phoenix gave a short laugh. "Well, if the courts and police in this city are any good, hopefully nobody can get away with breaking any. I'm just doing some..." He made a shrugging motion, realizing a moment later that that wasn't the best move he could've done with his poor arms. "Light reading?"

Besides, he was used to cramming days and nights of skimming through law texts. "Thanks," he added, "about the books. I should pay a little more attention to everything around me. I mean, what kind of lawyer would I be if I wasn't attentive to details? Details like...what laws this city even has. Or women in halls I'm about to stupidly run into. That kind of thing."

"O-o-oh," she said, drawing out the word into multiple syllables as she handed the books back to him. "You're a lawyer. You aren't one of those sleezy ones, are you?"

She glanced over him. "You don't look sleezy, anyway. But honestly, it'd probably be better for you if you were. People get arrested left and right in this city and I don't think many of them are innocent."

It wasn't a dive, but it wasn't her roost of choice. Lilah's natural habitat was a swanky bar, a no tie no service kind of place, unless you were a vampire with a soul and a habit of storming in wherever you pleased. But it was closer to her work than any place more upscale, had decent coffee, and was great for people-watching when she needed to get out of the office for five minutes lest she behead everybody. Generally she just would but this wasn't L.A. and she wasn't drawing from an endless pool of lackeys here. With a little more PR, that would change.

The atmosphere tonight was pretty dismal, and she was absently twirling her spoon in her cup of dark coffee (one sugar, no cream), counting minutes and sips, until a girl with hair so bright it was just close enough to appalling to be appealing, came in and caught her eye. She had a different air about her. Didn't seem local. Lilah stirred her drink again, slowly, and watched her from the corner of her eye.

It took a few minutes for Bonnie to notice that someone was watching her. But she noticed it, eventually, that creeping feeling on the back of her neck. Whether it was that sense that anyone got or whether it had something to do with being psychic--either way, it was there.

She turned, casting a swift glance around the room. When her eyes landed on Lilah, she knew, somehow, that she'd been the one watching. That could either be friendly or creeptastic.

Bonnie chose to believe it was friendly.

With a smile, she raised her hand in a little greeting, waving her fingers. "Have we met?"

She smiled back, using the same well-meaning, honest optimism she'd employed on the last round-faced redhead. Of course that didn't mean this girl had any talent at all, let alone one as spectacular as Bethany's. But, more flies with honey. If nothing else, she was a point of interest in Lilah's present boring break.

"I think I would remember." And she knows the other woman would. Lilah never

Bonnie took her cup of coffee and walked over to the other woman's booth. She was bored, and the woman had a weird aura. She couldn't quite figure it out.

"Bonnie," she introduced herself, sitting across from the woman. "Hope you don't mind the company. Bored out of my mind and the diner kind of smells like feet."

Christine was a nurse, and therefore was interested in the sciences. But since arriving in the city, she'd been learning that there were more forces in the universe than just science, like magic. She'd seen a bit firsthand, and ever studious, she headed for the library to see if she could learn more.

Heading towards the rack of books on magic, she saw a pretty redhead already there. Giving her a slight smile, Christine started to peruse the selection.

Bonnie smiled back, setting down some of her books on the table with a solid thump.

"Druids that were, these things are huge," Bonnie said with a good natured groan. "Looking forward to the day that Bete Noire catalogues all these dusty old things onto some online database."

The blonde had to laugh at the other's reaction to what looked like ancient tomes.

"But I wonder if the spells lose their potency if they're taken off the page and put into a computer."

"Worth the risk," she announced conclusively, wiping off her hands on her skirt. "Lifting these things all day is going to leave me with Popeye arms,I think."

She held out a hand to the blonde. "Bonnie McCullough."
