Phoenix was still new at all of this. He still didn't quite understand what was going on, and the idea of never being able to go home simply refused to register for now. But at least he had a place for a bit. (Even Gumshoe could afford someplace that's free.) And while that didn't take care of issues like clothing, food, transportation, and most importantly to help with all of the above, a job, it was better than bumming on the streets or finding a library to sneak naps in.

Although he did make sure to stop at the library and pick up more than a few books on law that were unfamiliar to him. He couldn't very well be a half-decent attorney if he didn't even know the laws of the land, right? On the other hand, he couldn't say with certainty that any, much less all, of the books had anything to do with law in Bete Noire, but he'd sort through them ( ... )

Bonnie had looked up just in time to see a pile of books heading straight for her.

"Oh, I'm so sorry!" she apologized as they came crashing down, even though she wasn't entirely certain it was her fault. Immediately, she knelt down on the floor to help the man gather them up. "Here, let me help you." She looked up at him and returned the smile.

As she gathered up the books, beginning to pile them up, she snuck a few glances at the titles. "Are you in trouble?" she asked, a teasing lilt to her voice. "Or just trying to figure out which laws you can get away with breaking?"

Phoenix gave a short laugh. "Well, if the courts and police in this city are any good, hopefully nobody can get away with breaking any. I'm just doing some..." He made a shrugging motion, realizing a moment later that that wasn't the best move he could've done with his poor arms. "Light reading?"

Besides, he was used to cramming days and nights of skimming through law texts. "Thanks," he added, "about the books. I should pay a little more attention to everything around me. I mean, what kind of lawyer would I be if I wasn't attentive to details? Details like...what laws this city even has. Or women in halls I'm about to stupidly run into. That kind of thing."

"O-o-oh," she said, drawing out the word into multiple syllables as she handed the books back to him. "You're a lawyer. You aren't one of those sleezy ones, are you?"

She glanced over him. "You don't look sleezy, anyway. But honestly, it'd probably be better for you if you were. People get arrested left and right in this city and I don't think many of them are innocent."

"Sleezy? Me? Never." At least he didn't look it. He could name a couple prosecutors who did, though. And sure, the suit might be cheap, but it fit well enough that nobody would think it made him sleezy.

"Sorry to say that I've got a pretty strong set of morals on me." Mostly. Ish. Strong enough, anyway. "And I've usually got a good sense of who I can trust or not. If I didn't believe they were innocent, I probably wouldn't take them on." Though he had to think on that for a moment. Mia had always said that trusting the client through and through was important, and that had always helped him seek the truth.

"But on the other hand, everyone has the right to fair representation, if they want it. I'll just have to see what comes up, whenever I can start taking cases." Had to actually set up everything first and then get his name out there and also make sure he was legally qualified to be an attorney here and--yes, Phoenix doesn't yet know how this place works yet, can you tell. "You're not the sleezy type in whatever you ( ... )

Bonnie laughed, standing back up to her feet. "No, I'm not sleezy."

At times morally ambiguous, sure, but that was just the way it went with vampires. It was hard to rely on blood to survive and always take the straight and narrow path--though she did try to generally play by the rules.

"I don't think I caught your name."
