So, since last we talked, LJ friends, I've developed an unholy obsession with James Bond. This is absolutely 100% entirely the fault of Skyfall and S.P.E.C.T.R.E. (and the throwaway inference that Bond has been with men before in Skyfall, and the fact that Ben Whishaw is a brilliant Q and a fantastic foil to Daniel Craig's Bond, and yes of course I ship it). Doesn't help that - despite my protestations to the contrary in 2012 - I can now see exactly what there is to like about Daniel Craig. It has nothing whatsoever to do with the tiny blue speedos and everything to do with that one sodding grey suit. Thanks again Skyfall. Bastard film.
Then Star Wars: The Force Awakens happened, and Daniel Craig was in it, and now I'm writing a fic about James Bond: Stormtrooper. And I need to vent my spleen about it, so here we go.
I don't talk about my own writing or my writing process (let alone what I'm trying to achieve when I'm writing a thing) often, so this may not make sense, and it may come across as really pretentious and over-analytical and stupid when you consider that this is basically crackfic. But this is literally what is running through my head every time I open the document.
Bond's trooper designation is JB-007. Because I read an article somewhere that (jokingly? seriously?) said this was so, and it wouldn't leave me alone. That's what I call him. (I'm pretty sure I'm never going to "reveal" his actual name, because 'James Bond' doesn't sound very Star Wars.)
Now, most of this fic is Q's POV because I am a coward of the highest order and I am frankly incapable of entering the headspace of James Bond.
Also because I needed to see trooper!Bond from an external POV, and Q's POV is inherently fun. Even when living under the boot of the First Order. And then the storyline of the fic got really weird because I got half a scene in, and realised that I love these characters but they're essentially the bad guys in this scenario OOPS??? Anyway. I digress.
Bond is JB-007 in the narrative voice. Q is, for the most part, referred to as 'the Quartermaster' - but Bond calls him 'Q', and eventually he becomes 'Q' in the narrative voice too. That's important. Names are important in the fic. Or, it feels like they are to me. (Q thinks it's important.) That's what I'm going for, at least; God knows if I'm achieving it. I think it might be more pretentious hogwash but whatever.
Q calls Bond 007, i.e. "Double-O Seven".
Quandary: how do I actually write 007/Double-O Seven?
I mean that literally. Do I type the words, or do I use the numbers?
Because when I'm calling him JB-007 in the narrative, it feels very impersonal- i.e. he's "just a trooper". I'm making a point later on in the fic that he stops being JB-007-the-Stormtrooper, and after that happens, he doesn't get called JB-007 again - just Double-O Seven/007. Using numbers feels incredibly impersonal when he's not a number any more, though.
But "Double-O Seven" is clunkyyyyy.
HRM.
I mean, I could have him do the introduction. You know: The Introduction. But there isn't really a good place to drop it in. (And in fact I've written a bit that I personally love where Q and Bond make a point of not asking each other their names.)
... I do have one other option, where Q finds out Bond's surname (Note to self: "Welcome, Master Bond.") indirectly ... which would be fine, I guess. But I'd still have to call him 007/Double-O Seven for an extended period before that point. UUUUUUUGGH.
*deep sigh*
And this is why I'm faffing about and not finishing the stupid fic.
Well, that and because I can't seem to write an appropriate kissing scene. I'm at the point now where I think I actually might just throw my hands in the air, leave it as massively unresolved UST, and write actual plot instead. XD I'm that fed up of trying to get this pair of eejits to put their mouths on one another.
