The oldest foreigner in pre-1949 Shanghai was a Russian woman, Agafia Garzey (Агафья Гардзей), who celebrated her 100th birthday on 18 February 1940. A resident of the Russian home for aged woman, at 1229 Rue Lafayette, Mrs Garzey chose to celebrate her 100th birthday by walking to Bubbling Well Road and back, aided only by her stick.
