Rory was already in a terrible mood when she came back to her room, due to
detention. Plus she was starving, which was why she had ordered enough Chinese food for three girls of her size.
And now her phone was ringing. She smiled as she checked the speed dial.
"Hi, Dad!"
"Hey, kiddo," Christopher said, the sound of a fax machine in the background. "What's shaking?"
"Um...." Rory briefly considered telling her father about her day in detention. "Nothing, really. I'm almost done with my college applications. Oh, and I'm really looking forward to next weekend."
Christopher sighed, and Rory really hoped she didn't already know what was coming.
But she did.
"That's what I was calling about," he said. "Something's come up with the merger, and I won't be able to make it, sweetheart."
Rory's heart sank. "But...okay. I understand."
"Maybe later in the year? You know I'd love to see your school," Christopher continued, papers shuffling now.
"Yeah, maybe," Rory said hollowly. "So, what's new with yo - "
A wailing baby joined the background chorus, and Rory's father cut her off. "Listen, kiddo, I have to go grab Gigi. Take care of yourself, right?"
"Right," she sighed. "Bye, Daddy."
Rory frowned sternly at her phone as she hung up, as though it was somehow its fault, and turned on her laptop to watch her new Frustrerte Fruer DVDs with a sigh.
