Room 213 [evening]
After a busy day of working in the library (and dealing with an upset Luke and...well, not working) and a newspaper meeting where she had a nice, long talk with Angela, Rory wanted nothing more than to curl up on her bed with a book.
But it was a welcome surprise when her best friend called her from Stars Hollow, even if Lane was whispering so her mother wouldn't overhear.
"Yeah, Dad cancelled," Rory said once the pleasantries had gotten out of the way.
"That sucks," Lane whispered sympathetically. In the background, an argument (or "haggling," as Mrs. Kim termed it generously) was going on over the price of what Rory was piecing together to be a chair.
"Eh, it's not really a big deal," Rory said.
"Well, yeah, it is," Lane hissed. "I mean, you were counting on hi - "
Rory could hear a harsh female voice on the other end. "Who are you talking to?"
"Um. It's just Rory, Mama," said Lane. "Her father cancelled his plans to visit her at school this weekend.
A longish pause, then Mrs. Kim's voice in her ear. "Goodnight, Rory. It is late to call."
And then click.
Rory frowned thoughtfully at the phone, and sighed before setting it aside and tucking herself against her pillow with a book.
