The good, the bad and the meh

The Time Traveller's Wife. Book was problematic but readable - even if all the really interesting stuff happened offscreen - at least Clare was somewhat defined, if not exactly a rounded or admirable character. The film version can't be arsed even with that... how on earth can one feel any empathy for this whingy, whiny Barbie doll to whom we are never really introduced?

Ugh. And Film!Henry's not much better; all the interesting and plotty and very flawed human stuff that could have made up for the glossing has been snipped out. What utter drivel. 2/10

On the other hand: also saw Splice - oh, now that's a film. One huge (but so elegantly, formally simple) idea, tightly reined into a lovely small story, beautifully shot, genuinely claustrophobic and engaging and nasty. Loved it. Definitely a keeper. 9/10

In other things: got my voice back, at last. Also saw BF'd daughter give piano performance at her school assembly yesterday - played confidently and well :) - at which event her brother also unexpectedly received a merit certificate for "improvements in attitude". Coffee with BF afterwards, at which we unexpectedly caught up with a third old schoolfriend - what a lovely day.
