Gerard Way

Son and heir of the Way empire, a criminal organization that had been founded generations back underneath a fortune made in hotels, he is also the big brother, object of obsession, and keeper of Mikey Way. He and Mikey are both a lot alike and a lot not. (Gerard was born with too much emotion and not enough violence, and Mikey had been born with not enough of the former and endless, depthless amounts of the later). Gerard has problems with addiction, especially in his teens, only on a larger, richer scale that most teenagers dream of. Cocaine, alcohol, anything else he can use to rebel by irresponsibility, semi-consciously (in both senses) trying to show he's unfit for the position he was born to. He has never been comfortable with the idea of inheriting an empire.

Gerard does not often enjoy violence, but mostly sees it the way most people would see white lies: something necessary, something that's just done.

Mikey Way

Mikey Way is several things that end in "opath", though no psychiatrist has been foolhardy enough to put it in writing. His hobbies include being expressionless, killing people, and loving Gerard (who has always been his older brother). As a consequence of being born into the time and the family he was, Mikey saw his first murder before he could walk, and killed his first man not so long afterwards. Mikey is in a way Gerard's connection to some of the wider world, the one that Gerard would never meet from his protected, caged position in the Way family.

Mikey finds Bob, and he is the one who is friends with Frank (who has been around the Ways since he was a child himself and has always looked up at them both wide eyed in possible admiration). While Gerard is too busy being introduced to the sons of Important People, Mikey found a lot of the really important ones.

Frank Iero.

The Iero family own several restaurants, their first and oldest being The Tuscany, the business that Frank was supposed to take over when the time came. The Ieros and the Ways have been connected since before Frank was born, and the transition from being in debt to the Ways, to being associates to friends to almost, almost part of the family, all happened before Frank was walking. What started off as a small family business is now several restaurants, all patronized by mobsters and the cream of the criminal element. They have gained a reputation from the Ways that they can never repay.

Frank's mostly a good son, except: Frank likes fighting. His parents would prefer he was a restaurateur, but he is too destructive for the kitchens and since he was old enough to sneak out, to meet with Mikey or just borrow one of the family cars, they haven’t been able to keep him away from fights and mischief and the underground of the hotel, so eventually he’s sent to work for the Ways officially, to make himself useful.

Bob Bryar

A monosyllabic monolith, Bob has a presence that’s larger than his physical self and a way with his fists that’s means it’s still hard to overestimate him. For a long time Bob Bryar is a regular guy with a hard-labour job, a short temper, and the frayed strings of his relationships trailing sadly behind him as he lived each day like he was in a cage. All of this is made utterly irrelevant when he accidentally kills a man in a bar fight and in the aftermath meets Mikey Way. Mikey saves Bob from prison and gives him a job; shoving him in a real cage for a while is, somewhat ironically, the beginning of what sets him free.

Partnered together at first in what seemed like a cruel joke, Bob Bryar and Frank Iero now come as a set, one blonde and one brunette both with matching bruises.

Ray Toro

Like Gerard, Ray is the scion of a huge and long-lasting criminal dynasty, and like Gerard he has been groomed for this role since before he was born; he has never held a job that wasn't in some way linked to or got by his mob connections, and he assesses almost everything that happens in his life with reference to how it will affect the business. Unlike Gerard, Ray is extremely sane, and very, very, very, very very repressed. For example; now in his thirties, he's still a virgin because he "doesn't have time for that". As a teenager and through college he worked as an intern for various state governors, collecting blackmail material for his family to use at later dates, and in the process met Brian Schechter. Brian went on to work for the FBI and CIA in various ill-defined and nefarious roles. He's useful. Ray is also hopelessly in love with him and will never, ever admit this to himself, never mind anyone else. Whether or not Brian knows is a matter for Brian.

Ray's legendary patience is at least in part a very carefully-maintained front, and if he ever explodes it's probably going to be the kind of explosion that can be seen from space.
