Bert McCracken
A former child prodigy (piano, chemistry, chess), Bert's the only one who's managed to avoid prison (although he has spent a few stretches in various psychiatric wards), and he's a genius. With a capital G. An obsessive, intense personality with a capacity for seriously complicated strategy and an unexpected store of strange charm, Bert is the undisputed leader of the four. Stories differ as to whether he rescued Quinn or Quinn rescued him, but whichever way around it was it's pretty certain neither of them would be alive now if they hadn't found each other. After a childhood of exorcisms and accusations of witchcraft and demonic possession, Bert can fake a very convincing epileptic fit, is prone to Tourette's-like outbursts of obscenity, and is drawn towards other broken and weird people: his interest lies somewhere between fixing them, making use of them, and falling in love with them.
Quinn Allman
What happens when the system set up to "save" people turns them into sausage meat instead is Quinn. He is basically RAGE condensed into a human form peppered with chemical burns and the marks of fights he had no hope of winning but went into anyway, like a hurricane of fists and teeth. Quinn is Bert's bodyguard (and his soulguard), and the Cleaner, and the person you give a prisoner to when you want that prisoner to meet his end in an inventive and brutal manner. If they were a Big Outfit, Quinn would be the one to Teach Someone A Lesson They Won't Forget; as it is he's the heaving-chested, wild-eyed wielder of hammers and invented weapons, capable of turning a difference of opinion into a bloodbath. It's hard to make Quinn smile, but Bert can do it in a heartbeat; it's hard to make him stop tearing at someone, and only his bros can achieve it. Quinn is touchy, venomous, prideful, vindictive, over-protective, and loyal to a degree that dogs can only dream of.
Dan Whitesides
As Quinn knows violence, intimately and instinctively, Dan knows busting in and busting out. He's a little like Houdini in reverse; there are few buildings that can keep him out if he really wants to get in; prison was not as easy and he had to work to get into the psychiatric ward instead. Where they claimed he wasn't crazy enough to be separated from the other prisoners, and dumped him back in with the populace, which would be when he tried to kill himself. Dan's weird humour and inane jokes have kept the four of them from spiralling off the wrong end of misery or rage on several occasions, and it's him who keeps Jepha inside safe parameters, who switches off Quinn's fury when Bert's not there. He's man you get to deal with a prisoner when you want him alive to give answers afterwards.
Jepha Howard
Occupying the interesting position of having been both a pit fighter and a prostitute at various points in his life, Jepha is the calm Zen centre of a very chaotic storm. He's known throughout the world of illegal fights for having a truly unbelievable capacity for taking damage, soaking up pain like a sponge and coming back to win when people are least expecting it; any fight with Jepha in is worth the admission fee. More privately it's obvious he "belongs" to Dan (at least, that's how they describe it), which limits his fucking around with other people to one or two encounters. Jepha is the soft touch and as such is remarkably good at getting information from people without them realising they're giving it to him. He laughs easily, forgives quickly, would probably actually let someone bleed him to death if it happened in a sexual context, and as such needs occasional policing by his bros. They look out for each other.
