I know I've posted dozens of pictures of Culzean over the years but it is such a glorious place* I hope you'll forgive me for posting a new more. I have a new friend. He appeared in the park beside my house a few weeks ago and daughter immediately christened him Albert, which seems like a fine name for an elephant. Albert is a life sized sculpture of an Indian elephant commissioned as part of the cultural legacy of last year's Commonwealth Games. He stands just outside The House for an Art ( Read more... )

I got back from a lovely break in the Western Isles last weekend and promptly came down with the cold from hell. It's ages since I've had a bad cold and I'd forgotten just how much they can flatten you. Over the last week I've travelled the length of the UK - from the Outer Hebrides, to Glasgow, to Cardiff, to Greenwich, and back to Glasgow. I got back home late on Thursday night and seem to have spent most of the weekend doing laundry. I'm just back from a flying visit to the Hebrides. We were only able to stay for three days but it was worth the trip, and thankfully the crossing wasn't quite as boisterous as this time last year! I mentioned to aletheiafelinea that I'd been trying, rather unsuccessfully, to take more pictures of flower meadows while I was on holiday and promised to post them, so here they are! This is the machair, a unique coastal land form found only in the north west of Scotland, and most commonly in the Outer Hebrides. The machair is a low lying fertile grassland ( Read more... )
