SNOW CAKE starring Alan Rickman, Sigourney Weaver, Carrie-Anne Moss, Emily Hampshire and Callum Keith Rennie. 4.5 / 5
I'm very glad we rented this movie from Netflix. It's a very "small" indie film, shot in Wawa, Ontario, Canada, with strong performances from all the actors.
Rickman's Alex Hughes is a depressed, buttoned-up Englishman who's come to Canada on what could best be called unfinished business. Flying into Toronto (or perhaps Sudbury), he rents a car to drive to Winnipeg ("It didn't look that far on the map") and ends up giving a ride to a young woman who befriends him (to his chagrin) in a truckstop diner. An accident changes everyone's plans and he goes to find a woman named Linda Freeman (Weaver), who turns out to be a high-functioning autistic person. Instead of a being a savant in a particular area (like "Rain Man"), Linda is quite verbal but also anal-retentive about tiny details and mostly disconnected from normal emotions. All the actors are good, but Rickman and Weaver really shine. This small, quiet movie is one you'll remember.
Anne's verdict: RENT THIS. Especially if you're in Canada, eh?:)
